RE: [motm] Pushing Partials Around/Microtonality

I'll have to see what texts I have. Wendy Carlos discussed this subject a lot in interviews (see Keyboard and EM) when her "Beauty in the Beast" album came out. I used to have some great books on acoustic physics, and one in particular about the physics of ethnomusicology. But I loaned them to a guy in 1990... you know the story... I can get gamelan-like tones using AM, FM, even a little ring modulations I guess, but the partials still don't line up with any particular scale. Who knows, this stuff may not be feasible without a lot of computer control.

Do you have any references I could look at in this regard? One thing that occurs to me at the moment is that many of the metalaphones present in gamalen music might be seen as having an FM or AM component to them. Have you looked in to mimicking this behavior via AM and FM?
