Flat rail prices!

Flat rail prices!

2000-06-11 by Paul Schreiber

Although I can't promise delivery dates right now, (around 3 weeks) I can
quote prices:

FR-12 12U long by 0.500" wide 10ga (0.134 thick) steel rails. Requires 8-32
x 1/4 screws to attach panels.
(I will get a quote on these, too). Counterbored for standard #6 flat head
wood screws.

1 -4 pcs are $20ea
5+ are $18ea

shipping is $6/order US, $14/order foreign.

Please order soon so I can get a good idea how many to order for the first
batch.

do they have one row of holes or two?

'requires 8-32 x 1/4 screws' : the standard motm screws will work?

Is that a pair (like top and bottom) for $40? It seems odd that they would
cost "the same" as the current rails since they would appear to have a fair
bit less machining involved.

I don't believe they are sold in pairs. Since, in my case, I want 5 rails to cover
27U of cabinet. That comes out to 2 top, 2 bottom, and one that I cut to fill the
remaining 3U gap for top and bottom. I hope my woodworker friend's band saw can cut
these or else I'm going to get a good workout with a hack saw!

1) 1 row of holes

2) no, because they are too long and will bore into the wood behind the
rail!

These are sold *each*. Much bandsaw cutting will be attempted :)

Remember these are 0.134 inches of STEEL.

They are sold by weight as well as tooling as well as greed.

This (drilling) occurred to me too, though I'm leaning more towards running a
slot down the wood (with a router or a table saw), or putting a washer
between the metal mounting rail and the wood support to get the clearance
between the metal and the wood.

Mark, at 1/2 inch wide they would have only 1 row of holes.

Yes and no. The nice black ones we get from Paul are 8-32 However, the
screws we currently use are longer. Notice Paul is talking about a screw
only 1/4 long here. I still plan to use the longer ones an drill the wood
out behind the holes as I use nylon washers behind my screws.

larry,

so if designed my case where so that there was clearance behind the rails
(after all, the rails only attach at the left & right sides of the case,
right?) then i could use the motm screws.

i assume nuts are not needed behind the modules, they will 'self-tighten' ?

hazy regards

The steel is cheap. It's drilling and tapping all the holes that cost.
And of course, that retail mark up. I just ordered 12. There's one new
cabinet door Paul. <snicker>

JB,
I like to drill. I mean, I "really" like to operate a drill. It's a sick
thing I know. My only regret is that since the rails are exactly the
length I need, I won't get the joy of cutting the length too.

Now, I don't like to operate a tap. Or, I would save the big bucks, buy
the steel rails cheap and drill and tap all the holes myself. But that
would be too sick even for me.

A real stooge Larry

I don't see it that way Mark. Even 1/8 inch steel will flex over that
length since there is no bend. The whole idea was to have these rails with
wood behind them. The shorter screws means no drilling and such unless you
are just retentive like me and want to use the longer screws so I can have
the nylon washers. The rail attachment is with screws into the wood behind
them, not with any hardware at the end.

You got that right.

could that DoMoaS prototype be used to get the pasta on at the right time

This is what I'm thinking, too. The only thing is that, assuming that both
the module mounting holes and the counter-sunk rail-mounting holes are
centered longitudinally, you wont want to make the channel go behind the
latter.

I'm thinking that routing a careful, non-continuous channel using a router
table might be the best way to go, leaving the material behind the
rail-mounting holes.

I guess we'll have to see them first to decide how best to handle this.
