Expressionist output panel

Expressionist output panel

2000-07-21 by Dave Bradley

I finished up my Expressionist output panel a couple of days ago, and
thought folks might like to see it. It takes input from the Expressionist
through a snake, with a mondo elco locking connector to mount on the back of
the synth cab. The cv and gate signals are buffered (perhaps unnecessarily).
Those amber LEDs sure look cool on the gates, and there is a green LED for
sync start and a red LED for sync clock.

I need to match the screw head paint more closely to the panel's paint!

Hey Dave, how about sharing your schematics for us less technically
inclined folks. Also, if anyone else is interested on having a panel
like this silkscreened let me know. I've been planning a panel very
similar to this for a few months now. It would be a substantial
savings
if we got multiple panels done at the same time, and the more people
we
have the cheaper it gets. (ie: 1 person = $101, 2 people = $51, 3
people = $34 ...)Let me know if anyone is interested. -Nate

Hi Dave and group!

I want one too! You did a nice job. Would you or Paul or someone else be
interested in building a bunch? I'm thinking it might be good to have Paul's
sheet metal vendor do it so it will look exactly like the other MOTM gear.

(I guess I should start on that code update, we've been talking about!!)

Wow; that is *very* sexy. But what are the round grey spots-- one between
the 4th and 5th amber LED and two on the right hand side about 1/3rd and
2/3rd the way down? Are those to support the snake?
<<<<<

Those are screw heads holding the pcb onto the front panel via long screws
and standoffs. Because of the jack density, I could not find a way to mount
the pcb via the usual L brackets. So the pcb is a MOTM diy protoboard, cut
down in width, and mounted parallel to the back panel in 3 spots. Like I
said, I need to match the screw head paint more closely!

The snake was made from 2 Hosa snakes (yeah, I know they ain't the
greatest), each with 8 color coded 1/4" plugs, and a mic cable with a din
plug carrying the sync signals. The other end terminates in the connector,
which mounts to the back panel of the synth cab. So the weight of the snake
is not supported by the module. Attached is a another image in
mid-construction, showing the connector laying on the bench. These things
are bomb proof!

The panel was a MOTM blank. I had a silkscreen made for it already. If my
panel layout is suitable for others, anyone is welcome to use my screen
printer and screen. It would probably cost around $20 for setup, and a buck
or two to print each panel after the setup. Contact me privately if you are
interested. If you prefer a different layout (e.g. front panel midi jacks),
maybe you could work with Nate to agree on a design.

The schematics are simple, but there is a lot of wiring just because there
are a lot of outputs. I buffered each output (8 cv outs, 8 gate outs, sync
start, sync clock) with a simple opamp voltage follower. I used dc accurate
LT1013s on the CV outputs, and TLO72s elsewhere. The LEDs are each driven by
an NPN switching transistor (e.g. 3904). I'll try to get a schematic
together, and post on my (infant, not to be viewed yet) synth web page.

Well, I wouldn't be eager to tackle that project again! I need to do some
patching for a change. I'm looking forward to those new Expressionist
features! <VBG>

If you are an Expressionist owner and want to have input regarding the new
features, please email me.

Make the Subject: EXPRESSIONIST REQUEST

Please don't ask for things like: rotary encoder, more jacks, or any other
HARDWARE changes.

You can ask for things like: more LFOs, portamento scale changes, etc. Some
of you have been feeding me data since you bought it, and I have saved all
that info. You don't need to send it again unless you want to update it or
something.

Also, I'm starting to visit the JP8 code and that will occur in parallel
with the Expressionist coding.

MacKnobby is coming along, but my programmer is in NY at MacWorld. Sorry for
the delay.

One last thing: if you have time, the Knobby contest is still on. You can
make profiles without the box (without the software even) and submit them to
win a Knobby. Email your profile here to submit it. Make the Subject:
KNOBBYED INI FILE

These subjects help me filter messages into appropriate areas.

Thanks,

Can I have 8 more gates and 8 more CV outputs?

Just kidding - I've given you enough grief already!
