OT - Wanted: MIDI guts

OT - Wanted: MIDI guts

2000-10-08 by ivancu@aol.com

I just bought a bass-pedal keyboard on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=457157947

This is just the keyboard switches essentially. I would like to take the
guts out of an old broken keyboard so that I can make this a simple MIDI
keyboard.

Anyone out there have anything that they want to sell cheap?

maybe Jeff from signal arts (http://home.eol.ca/~jeffry/satkbd.htm) could help you out. If I understand correctly, he has boards to convert keyswitch data to midi data. If that doesn't work, you might be able to find a Yamaha shs-10 really cheap on ebay ( I paid $5 for mine at a garage sale) It's a mini keyboard that looks like a small version of a Roland AX-1 (lol) but it has midi. you could slice and dice one of these for the electronics. the nice thing is it'll run off batteries or a wall wart. -Nate

Thanks. Here's the specific link for his MIDI bass pedal circuit:

http://www.clubi.ie/tomscarff/bass_pedal/midi_bass_pedal_1.htm

I'm still going to shop around (want to have things such as octave transpose
and possibly pitch bend and mod) but I might end up building his circuit.

That's one of the first places I looked. Unfortunately (or fortunately)
Dennis and the gang there are setting the audio world on firewire now as
Digital Harmony. Cool stuff, but it means they don't have time to play in
the non-profit world of specialty MIDI kits. Too bad.

I have a recommendation for one you might consider.
Yamaha made a toy looking strap on keyboard that had a MIDI transmit (no
velocity) and about 3 octaves of keys. The model was SHS-10 I see them on
e-bay for about $50 working. The velocity version was SHS-200 (more
expensive and hard to find). The SHS-10 was only about $75 new.

Thanks. I've pretty much decided that if I can't find anything interesting
soon I'll get a Kaysound MK-4901 or MK-4902 which will run between $70-$110.
I get a number of features with those keyboards that aren't available with
older models.
