OT MIDI Merger

OT MIDI Merger

2000-10-15 by Al Wagner

Hi,
Does anyone know where I could find the plans or kits for a simple 2in-1out MIDI Merger? I have found them for sale but at the price of a MOTM module!!! Since I really don't have to have one I would buy another MOTM module!!!
Thank you,
Al Wagner

There is no such thing as a simple MIDI combiner. Due to running
status which was in the original MIDI spec, it's not a simple
task. A MIDI merge routine must examine the input, determine
the length of the message and then send it out before merging
data from the other input. And if one of the inputs has notes
with running status, the merger must be smart enough to output
the channel and message type before appending the note number.
While I'm sure there a some new PICs out there fast enough to
merge two MIDI streams I don't know of anyone who has made the
code publically available. If you like pain and misery you can
build your own 8031/51 based unit. Go here for more details:

or in ZIP at:

I suggest saving yourself some hassle and buying a merger for
$89. Or buy a used Digital Music MX-8 or JLCooper MSBrev2.

Used MX-8s go around $100 on e-bay. It is a great machine, and more user
friendly than the JLCooper.

If you can find one somewhere (I think they are discontinued), the Anatek
Midi Merger is powered by the Midi port itself. There is no other power
needed. I got mine pretty cheap, like around $40 or so, and it works great. I
found mine at my local music store on the bottom display, towards the back of
the shelf....

There is also a company called Midi Solutions (?) that may have had a
similarly priced unit.

 Good luck,

I still use my MX-8 (bought brand new when it originally came out) to
merge midi clock from a drum machine into the midi controller kbd to
run the Expressionist.

I agree, great box. Typical crappy pushbutton UI, however.

Nice and inexpensive mergers (and other MIDI accessories) for low prices:

In the U.S. you can buy them from:

Hi
I recently built the midi merger in the Elektor magazine (May 2000).
It works well, and is very compact. It uses two Atmel AT90S2313's.
It wasn't that expensive either, although the Atmel parts are a bit hard to find. Lead times of March next year, but you can order them from reader services.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Andy

Thank you everyone for your help! I think I'm going to go the patchbay route, then I'll be ready to expand for future stuff (my dream list is huge!!!)...
