kenton v. encore...

kenton v. encore...

2000-11-13 by doc pendergast

h3y all,
the day of reckonin' is soon upon me. i'll have money for a midi=>cv
converter here soon. i was checkin' out the kenton and encore
webpages last night. then harassed both paul s. and tony k. tony
recommended postin' to get your guys opinions.
my issues:
kenton: 1/8" jacks. i have a tendency to break them more
occasionally than i'd like.
encore: wall wart. i have too many as it stands.
i'm havin' a hell of a time decidin' between the lesser of 2 evils.
at this point the voices in my head scream, "cash the check, flip a
bloody coin, and pick the winner."
any thoughts?
peace,
doc

A very biased opinion...

I'd go with the encore expressionist. the wall wart was the first thing
i noticed about this unit, since i mount the expressionist in the same
cabinet as my motm, i solved that problem by adding a 9V transformer to
the back of my motm-900 power supply, now i just flip one switch to
turn everything on and no more pesky wall wart. i don't have any
problems with the kenton stuff, but the only M->CV convertor I would
buy from them is the pro-4 and at $899, it's a a little pricey. I love
the expressionist and find it's 8 CV and 8 gate outputs to by very
useful. The polyphony options are also very usefull and user friendly.-

I'm new to the MOTM list, but not to the cv/midi world. I have a Kenton Pro
4 that I bought years ago. It's a little pricey but you will never have to
worry about any cv/midi/din again. I use everything on it and it's fully
programmable. Syncs my 101,202,303,Serge,MOTM,Blacet stuff to my midi gear
without any hassles. If you're worried about breaking the jacks DON'T, CAN
YOU SAY TANK! This thing is built to last and I'm sure that's one of the
reasons Paul sells them. Of course this is all MHO and I haven't owned any
other conv. box, but if you're going to be mixing a lot of different
ins\outs you can't go wrong with this one.

Encore.
Once you plug in a wall wart in the back of your rack, you forget
about it. An 1/8" jack is a hassle forever.
More channels. More features. More power.
More.

Here is a good comparison online:

I have an Expressionist and love it.

Doc,

It depends on what you want to use it for. You might want to check out Mark
Pulver's comments on all three devices on www.midiwall.com.

I don't know the Kenton very well but the Encore is a great unit for dealing with
multiple MIDI->CV connections since you can set up scaling, polarity, LFOs, etc. for
each CV and Gate out.

The JKJ unit is great for controlling a single synth on a budget.

And where else are you going to be able to talk with the designer of the
product on you own newsgroup!??!!??!?!?!?!?!?

:)

Ok, enough of that.

Just to give all of you an update:

The Universal Event Generator is almost in production. The status is that
I'm waiting for a couple more long lead time parts to show up, and then
they will be sent for assembly. It's looking like the middle of December. It
will only be available assembled and the price is $289. It should be
shipping the week of Xmas.

The Expressionist code is moving, but very slowly due to other activities.
Sorry. It will come soon though.

The JP8 code development is frozen right now. It's a non-revenue project so
it take a back seat to just about everything else. I do have projects behind
it, but you
