I agree. I've had a running Email note-sharing with two friends about it all
day. I never thought that the Lynch version had any positive aspects...
until I saw this one. Less offensive than Lynch's, but also less of
everything else. A big yawn.

Anyone catch part 1 of the "Dune" miniseries on the SciFi channel
last night?

Ouch!

I was SO hoping to erase the memory of the David Lynch movie. At
least that one allowed you the visceral enjoyment of watching a train
wreck. This version just bored me. Sleepwalking acting and bad CGI!

Don't even joke... he's butchering "Planet of the Apes" as we speak.

Dune. YAWN. Go read all the stories penned by 'Cordwainer Smith' you
can find, given that Frank Herbert pretty much stole all the background
for Dune from him. Much better than the novel that it took Hebert like 25
attempts to get published. (By _Chilton's_, of all places! Whats next,
the ornithopter DIY repair manual? ;)

Ah, what exactly is wrong with that movie ?
I remember I was deeply impressed when it first came to the movie
theaters. (How many years ago was that ?)
I like the "ancient" decor of that movie, as opposed to the modern-ness
of many other SciFi films.

Visually it was great, but Lynch "grossed it up" and then added a magical
device called a "weirding module" at the end to save the day, while Herbert
took great pains to make the story sort of 'anti-technology' in many ways.
And then it rained at the end. Hoo boy.

BTW, I have a copy of the shooting script and it describes at the end a
tracking shot into Paul's eye that showed rain, meaning that it was Paul's
vision for the future; but like so many scenes, between the planning &
execution/editing they forgot what they were doing, and made it literal.
What do you want from a film who's director thought it was called "June" for
the first six months he worked on it?

In general, Lynch messed with all of the fundamentals of the book and came
up with a film that was less about the story of Dune and more like someone's
nightmares after having read the book and downing three pepperonis pizzas
before bed. Still, it DID have SOME kind of vision, whereas the current
version is lifeless.

(It's only a matter of time before someone yells at us for this thread...)

The worst things about the Lynch movie for me -
1. its totally incomprehensible plot (given the need to depict 10000
years of subtle power relationships, but the editing made it even
worse)

2. the Harkonnens were cartoon figures HAHA! I AM EVIL! HAHAHA!

3. the intentionally gratuitous repellant scenes with heart plugs,
etc.

But at least it had energy. I'll watch part 2 tonight, but they will
probably introduce a menage a trois with Paul, Chani, and Irulan in
the name of "furthering the plot".

Okay, now you've piqued my interest. ;-)

I'm going to do my own soundtrack to the novel. (There, curbing it back to
topic...<bg>) Anyone ever hear the Jade Warrior suite for Dune? Not too
shabby. I have never been able to get hold of a copy of the Klaus Shulze
"Dune," after all these years.

OK Tkacs, I was wrong, but close. Instead of a menage, Irulan hops a
Guild heighliner to Geidi Prime for a little undercover under the
sheets with Fehd.

Sheesh.
