Well, picture it not spread out. Then it sounds like a mess because  you've 
got your B next to your C and your F next to your G but an extra half  step 
away. Laaaaaaaaaa.

I meant lots of unpressed notes between pressed notes. For instance,  
G-C-F-B. I'm not near a keyboard, so I don't know how that really sounds, but  I 
don't think it would sound dissonant.
