www.mellotronics.com How 6 track tapes work! The idea behind 6 track tapes is to provide 5 unique blends. Here's how.......... You have the possibility of positioning your headblock in 5 positions: A / A+B / B / B+C / C. When you choose your 6 tracks, say Flute/Violins/Brass/String Section/Eight Choir/Church Organ, they will be allocated as follows: A = Flute / Violins A+B = Violins / Brass B = Brass / SS B+C = SS / Eight C = Eight / Church Org. You can create 5 unique blends depending on how wild you want to make your choices. By necessity, these tapes will be tuned up to avoid hazardous clashings of pitch which exists to some extent in all Mellotron recordings. Due to mixing, the 6-Track format would be a bear for selecting the right voices. Maybe all strings or all brass would be a direction to go. But, it may even get more bizzare(slap me if I'm wrong on this). If the track widths are correct, and you have the selector centered on a voice, you should have a little sound from each side voice. Using your selections as an example; center on Flute, and you would hear a little Split Choir and M300A violins in the mix.
