Well I don't have a Mac, I think Logic 9 won't recognise vsts, which wouldn't allow you to use one of the free plugins, Redtron is my favourite, although there may be some software work around according to the bulletin boards.
There is a version of M-Tron for the Mac which is suitable for Logic according to the Gforce web site. M-tron isn't very expensive, it isn't wonderful in my opinion but it's not bad value, tronomaniacs may notice the difference but most normal people won't.

Also, Mac has some sort of soundfont and soundfont2 player built into audio-units. If you can get hold of unbundled samples and a soundfont creator you can work it that way.
