OT-new addition

OT-new addition

2011-11-12 by fdoddy@aol.com

Going to southern VA next weekend to pick up my newly purchased Hammond M3!!! Only two owners, only moved twice and its current owner is a piano and organ tech/hammond wiz. The first owner was the proverbial little old lady who played it on Sundays for her church group. Don't know the exact age, but we'll find out. It has the Leslie interface installed and comes with a spare preamp and tube set. My Leslie 145 is fully functioning but going through a cabinet restoration. My wife thinks I'm crazy. Wait till she hears this thing cranked.

I'll see how the day goes. It's going to be a long one even considering I'm leaving at 4 AM. It's a little over 7 hours to my destination, but I'll keep in touch.

Congratulations Fritz- I love those M3's- you could drop them off a
battleship, retreive them months later , dry them off and they would still
play (something I heard Hammond actually did). Maybe in the future you can
get the foldback mod on the upper register and it will be in essence a B3
with shorter keyboards.

Hi Fritz,

This guy on my Hammond forum can probably help with the foldback mod: http://captain-foldback.com

He also archives schematics on everything. If you want to come to California I have a working M3 I will

give you for free! I’m tired of hearing my girlfriend bitch about it being in the front room J. I have an

XK-3c so my back breaking days of B3, C3, and M3s are over! J

Cheers,

Gary

RE: [newmellotrongroup] OT-new addition

2011-11-13 by Gary Brumm

Well it would have been great to meet you and I would have gained points with the girl friend in the process! J

It’s been there for over a decade so if you’re ever on the left coast let me know……

It was given to me by a keyboard player/friend but I always had a B3/C3 with a Leslie back then for gigging so

the M3 became living room furniture…. Now that I have the XK-3c and a Ventilator I would like to upgrade my

living room to a C3 and 122 (to really piss off my girlfriend J )…..

Gary

Congratulations Fritz- I love those M3's- you could drop them off a
battleship, retreive them months later , dry them off and they would still
play (something I heard Hammond actually did). Maybe in the future you can
get the foldback mod on the upper register and it will be in essence a B3
with shorter keyboards.

Now that I have the XK-3c and a Ventilator I would like to upgrade my
living room to a C3 and 122 (to really piss off my girlfriend J)…..

This is quite interesting, there have been several c3s for sale in NZ recently and I did briefly think about them but I think the digital one sounds pretty convincing, might look at the SK1 if it sounds as good.

Hi Fritz,

Must be the week for Hammonds. Just returned from Cincinnati after
purchasing an M103. This was from the original owner who gave me all
the original documents and maintenance records . It was purchased, are
you ready Frank, 9/11/1963 for $1,663.40. That's close to $12,500 in
today's dollars. Her Father worked for General Motors in Springfield,
OH and financed for 48 months. It looks and sounds great. Will pick up
Saturday after I find 3 guys to help move it.

Regards,

John

I just left Cincinnati a year ago after living there for 13 years. You could do better, but you could do a lot worse - the crime rate is almost non-existent there.

Jealous of all the lucky new owners, as usual. A couple months ago I could have picked up a Leslie branded organ with 122 unit, but was flat broke. :( Would love to pick up a Hammond or better yet, a Mellotron. I don't think there are any left undiscovered in California, certainly not the Central Valley, but I keep scouring anyway.

In other news I've nearly re-capped the power supply on my Conn spinet. I'm pretty sure I wired two electrolytics backward and am trying to figure that out before I plug it in. Waiting on a few more caps to ship to me, then it lives!

Sean I’ve replaced/installed hundreds of electrolytic caps in my technician days, and never saw an unmarked polarity.
Look them over carefully for the +/-, or the black stripe.
Maximum smoke if they’re backwards, and the smell is awful.

Re: OT-new addition

I have no idea. I hear that the Leslie corp never made an organ, but I have seen a few with the Leslie name as the brand on the organ. Something about they'd contract out to some other organ maker for a batch and put their badge on them.

On the capacitor stuff, the caps in question, I'm not sure if they were electrolytic (so I don't know if the white band was marking polarity or which end had the foil), but the replacements sure are.

http://valvenektar.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/DSCN0892.jpg
Is more or less what the originals looked like, only with a white stripe on one end. (I assumed that was the negative side and replaced accordingly.)

Here's the schematic I drew of what I currently have. The red circled cap is the one in question. There are two of these circuits, and I'm assuming without really knowing that there's one on each leg, (+) and (-)

I remember seeing a leslie 900 on the Partridge Family show that was labeled Wurlitzer so I am sure there
was a lot of OEM branding going on.

Those caps in the picture are not electrolytic and are not polarized ...so no worries!

Hi Sean-
Just a comment. Maybe the schematic is missing a connection line or something, but it seems incomplete, even as a partial circuit. I find it hard to interpret. If it is somehow biasing the transistor, it is a mighty complicated way to do it, but the polarity of the cap should be right. Any other thoughts on this, anybody?

Collaborating what Gary said, the folks on the Organ Forum have pointed out that the caps in question were not polar, and won't work with polar caps.

They also pointed out that the circuit I drew makes no sense. I agree, but don't know much. I double checked the schematic and it is correct, and the circuit is as I found it upon purchasing the organ, and it did run. I have no clue how it works, just that it does.

Removing white keytops....suggestions?

2011-11-21 by Jack Younger

Hi!

Working on changing the key-top material on my tron (white keys only)....wondering what the best methods for removing are. Anybody?

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Removing white keytops....suggestions?

You might want to try a little heat from a heat gun (be careful) and then
slide a thin blade under them to work them loose.

I figured it was something along those lines. What adhesive do you like for securing them?

Gorilla glue will work, CA probably will as well. I imagine Titebond would
also be excellent.

OT - R.I.P. Michael Garrick

Legendary British jazz pianist and composer Michael Garrick passed away on November 11th.

Just recently, I acquired several of his albums and have been enjoying them immensely. For some of you who like British / European jazz music, I highly recommend you check out his music.

Hi John,

Congratulations on your M103; it looks beautiful too !

Since July, I've been looking at a one owner (deceased), living room kept 1956 Hammond B3 and matching bench and 1 speed Leslie 21H, being sold on consignment in a piano store; a rare find in Miami in such excellent condition. What a beautiful instrument ! I drop in to the store from time to time just to look at it.

Problem is - the lowest the family will go is $ 9,500; I was advised by a respected member of this group that that is way too much.

Oh well... So it goes...

Robert
