If any progheads ever want to figure out why they cannot get laid then this video is about as good a reason as they will ever find.
The opening moments of this actually made me laugh out loud; it completely reminded me of those 'Shreds' parody videos (check this or this or this if you've never seen them before - the last one actually is how that type of music sounds to me)

I managed to keep a (mostly) straight face until the camera pulled out enough to reveal what the guitarist was wearing. Uproarious laughter ensued.
Even though I found the vocals to be nearly painful, I acknowledge that there are certainly talented players here, but it's not my cup of tea. More power to those that do enjoy it.

Well, if you consider that a lot of hip good looking "artists" these days can't even sing or play simple songs very well in a studio, let alone live on stage, you might give a little more due respect to talented true artists who do at worst a reasonable job of pulling off difficult and complex music totally live. Plus, keep the time frame in mind, the GG wasn't filmed last year, it was in the late 70's. That said, Gentle Giant's music can be difficult to get used to and appreciate and the rough edges and poorer sound quality of even the best live recorded examples are not the best place to introduce noobs to their music! ;-) John L Rice

Well, I liked it, which I suppose is the kiss of death for most artists. The idea interested me. I think they look like they are enjoying the performance. I've seen quite a few bands perform as if they were doing the audience a favour, but I don't see that here. The result might be crap, I couldn't say, but I don't see anything self indulgent. I can only assume, John L Rice, that your post was in response to mine. You seem to make a few assumptions about me, which can be a dangerous thing to do with anyone, but hey, I'm a nice guy so nothing nasty or said in anger here.
I have no clue what "hip good looking artists" (and their implied lack of ability and talent) have to do with this at all. I don't listen to or watch these kind of artists.
Having played live for a number of years, I'm more than aware of how difficult conditions can be for musicians on stage, even when trying to do something as simple as competent harmony vocals.
I don't recall typing anything disrespectful or even untrue about this performance. The vocals at the beginning ARE painful to me. I do not like them and would not willingly listen to them again. I never said these guys are bad musicians and openly acknowledged their talent. I just don't care for what they're playing.
Yes, I agree this isn't what you would want to use to introduce a "noob" to GGs music, then again, I'm not a "noob". I was aware of GG in 1974 when this was recorded, and have been since then. I didn't really care for them then, and still don9;t, but you won't see me tearing them down. If you like 'em, that's fine with me.
Next time you may want to consider that owners and enthusiasts of the Mellotron that are members of an email list centered on the Mellotron might just be familiar with the bands of this era. ;-)

Although I've searched, unfortunately, I can't find any live performances of the band in their early years when they utilized the Mellotron in some of their songs. 2 of the original members + the drummer from their third album have performed live in recent years under their new name "Three Friends". I'm new to the group..but a prog/tron fan...
I love GG a lot and I'd go as far as Free Hand as a good album. However I don't think - except for Acquiring the Taste - that the Tron was a Kerry Minnear favorite instrument. A long time ago I had the chance to interview Patrick Moraz and Tony Banks (I'm a journalist) and they complained a lot about the usual problems...delay..etc etc...besides Kerry's style has always been more 'funky' than melodic...except of course for all the exceptions on ATT and the coda on 3 friends...an amazing tune...that never ends...

Gary Green has been at NEARfest every year that I've been there, since 2003. He hangs out with the attendees and is always at the late-night Jam sessions after the shop. He's always been a hell of a nice guy and well liked. In 2010, Three Friends was (were?) the Saturday night headliner. They had a last minute substitution at lead vocals (Pierre Bordeleau) after their regular lead vocalist, Mick Wilson, was denied entry into the United States. Since I was working backstage I got to see them rehearsing the material with Pierre right up until the last minute. While his voice is far from my favorite, I thought Pierre did a hell of a job, all things considered, and it was a great show. What made it especially cool for me (and Gary, I'm sure) was that Gary Green was playing in front of around 1100 close, personal friends. He kicked ass. After his show was over, to his credit, he went right back to being Gary Green the nice guy. No pretension at all (Dave Cousins, cough cough), hanging out as usual.
