"In The Beginning" - Moody Blues (Threshold)

"In The Beginning" - Moody Blues (Threshold)

2012-04-28 by tron400

Someone posted this question on the Synthesizers.com group. It sounds like a combination of sounds to me. Anyone want to take a crack at it?

"In the song "In The Beginning" by the Moody Blues", what produces that opening sound. I have wondered this from the time I first heard it!"

I remember reading that it was originally a microphone held to the motor of one of their MkII units. This seems a little dubious to me though as I listen to it.

I wish I had a MkII to try it with.

With some processing, I suppose it's possible. Way in the background, you can hear what to me sounds like MkII Violins.

OT - Congratulations To Sheila Jordan

It's nice to hear that Sheila has just been named the 2012 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. Very well deserved...

Yeah-those could very well be some MkII Violins playing random chords in the background. I usually try and listen to them when ever I play that part. ;

As to the bass hum, I would guess it would be the motor, or a synth that is being used along with the 'airflow' (Well-that's what I call it anyway) sound....

They used just the 'airflow' sound again on 'Every Good Boy Deserves Favor' on 'My Song' at the end of the album.

A very interesting question, since it is a ethereal-restfull sound to my ears. :)

Someone posed the same question to Tony Clarke on Mike Pinder's website, but unfortunately, he's no longer with us, so there was no answer.

I don't think the Moodies were using synths until a little later.

Hi all-
If I had to guess, Mike Pinder probably recorded the motor noise, then played it back at a different speed or half-speed. If a dynamic mic was used, it could've picked up all sorts of electronic noise from the motor, including the high-pitched whine. It would also make sense that the recording was a multitrack mixture of many sounds, including the low-level MK2 violins.
I wonder what the sound was supposed to represent. Someone waking up with ears ringing from an acid dream after a rock concert? A realization of self after the incident?
The high-pitched whine is much like the tinnitus I live with all the time.

Sorry I didn't recognize the name of this.

If you're talking about the beginning and close of Threshold Of A Dream, yes it the sound and whine of the Mellotron MK II along with high strings played in various chords.

It's a very spacey sound. I think it would make a great choice as a new Mellotron sound
- you could have the whine and noise on each key with background high violins in the key that you are playing.

It would be an interesting experiment.
