Hi all- The picture of Uriah Heep's "Demons and Wizards" brought back memories. I listened to it recently. The only progressive thing on the album was the cover, a wonderful erotic Roger Dean painting. Okay, there were songs about a demon and a wizard (who got drunk with the songwriter). But there were no 'trons or synths, just some innovative organ playing. Ya just gotta have 'trons and synths to be prog. Cracked's knowledge of prog is cracked. Still, I liked the album. Solid rock. Bruce, when I think of Uriah Heep, the only two things I think of are that cover and Easy Livin'. I agree, the writer of the article seems to have a somewhat nebulous grasp of "prog".

In the time of Uriah heep I would say that prog was nebulous and undefined. I'm not even sure I would agree with todays definition of prog. Certain elements came from different places. There were ballads by the band Mountain that seem as much or more prog to
me as Dream Theater or Porcupine tree. I think I liked the genre better when it was less defined....

...and simpler. A lot of the modern stuff is just a wankfest IMHO. Bands like Mogwai, The Album Leaf and Grizzly Bear are very "proggy" to me, but don't have the trappings of the neo-prog bands mentioned below. Just my 2 cents... fritz

Martin, you should listen to Moon Safari. Incredible musicianship combined with great songwriting and topped with 3, 4, and 5 part harmonies that in my opinion are as good as anything the Beach Boys ever recorded... and that's saying something for me because I have always loved Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.
Also, the last album from Anglagard was quite spectacular though completely different from Moon Safari.

Hey John- Friends used to play Heep's other stuff, but I never had any of their other albums. Again, good solid-beat early 70's rock. However, I just checked Mellotron Planet and found that, when given the chance, they infused quite a bit of mellotron into their tunes. The early album "Very 'Eavy, Very 'Umble" had flutes on "Come Away Melinda", combining prog with anti-war thoughts. It's worth a youtube check. Actually Uriah Heep used quite a bit of tron on the 1st 2 albums; Come Away Melinda, Wake up (Set Your Sights)-very jazzy, with tron violins and cello; Bird of Prey (North American version is best with in your face violins) and 2nd LP (Salisbury); Lady in Black, another version of Bird of Prey.
