#1697 renovation

#1697 renovation

2014-01-11 by fdoddy@aol.com

Hi Folks,

Well, I just completed phase 1 of my Mellotron renovation. After about 15 years of nearly flawless fairly heavy service, I decided to splurge on my tron.

I purchased 35 new pinch roller assemblies from Streetly. Martin convinced me I should replace the keyboard felt and drive belt as well. Everything was installed today according to Martin's specification. I also balanced and leveled the keys using Martin's tips. Replacing the keyboard felt made an incredible difference in feel. Next up is setting up the keyboard from scratch.

I was amazed at the difference between my old pinch rollers and the new Streetly assemblies. My son summed it up simply, "You're replacing the old thin bald tires with new racing grips". I also noticed the old drive belt was quite slick, while the new belt had considerable tooth. The new rollers have noticeably more grip and the edges are beveled to prevent the roller from cupping. All my old rollers are cupped. Once set up, I am anticipating my machine playing as light as my Hammond with a more consistent playback..very exciting.

I took a bunch of pictures, so I'll review them and post some in a bit if they are interesting.

New pinch rollers make a world of difference and they're easy to replace. I don't envy you changing the felt and resetting the pad arms though. Did you get the felt from Streetly or from a local source?

I know some old Mellotron parts can be rebuilt. Replcing rubber and glueing m=new pads, even relapping heads. but some other parts vex me, I don't get it.
I am putting new pots on an EMS VCS3 and I am going to toss the old ones out. I have offered money for them but I can't get a why answer that makes any sense.
Given there is money on offer, why I give a shit is a good question.

Not felt! Streetly sent me a strip of leather that they use. It went in easy. It deepens the throw of the keys and provides a firmer landing. I instantly preferred it. The old felt slides right off and the new leather strip was applied with contact cement..easy.

I'm actually looking forward to the pad arms and roller resetting. It's therapeutic for me.

Yeah...good question. Selling my old pinch rollers didn't even enter my mind...it's not like it's Elvis's guitar :)

Leather you say, really interesting

I do understand the mojo thing John, but I have to have the smallest shred of empirical data to make me feel like I am not getting over. I feel bad selling junk.

I buy old guitars and tell myself that the oil and sweat gives it life, that's almost complete bullshit and if i could get close to that It would be ok.

I think I am just going to give them away as souveniers.

Gino, just so you don't get the wrong impression, I'm joking. Mojo, followed closely by a cork-sniffing usage of "Tone Wood" get my eyes rolling quicker than just about anything when it comes to electric guitar discussion.

Hey Fritz-
Pinch rollers are in my future too. My originals are simply rocks on wheels (ala the Flintmobile). Is the new keyboard stop strip a soft & thick suede leather?

It is soft, but not as thick as the original . It feels firmer than the mushy keyboard felt. I think it feels superior to the felt.

Hey Fritz-
Pinch rollers are in my future too. My originals are simply rocks on wheels (ala the Flintmobile). Is the new keyboard stop strip a soft & thick suede leather?

New pinch rollers make a world of difference and they're easy to replace. I don't envy you changing the felt and resetting the pad arms though. Did you get the felt from Streetly or from a local source?

Remember, if you decide to overhaul it, put whatever you no longer need on
eBay. Someone will likely buy it.

$3,000.00

Remember, if you decide to overhaul it, put whatever you no longer need on eBay. Someone will likely buy it.

Your response wasn't out of line, Gino. If I'd been serious in my suggestion, I'd have been playing a bit of an asshole.

Gino, just so you don't get the wrong impression, I'm joking. Mojo, followed closely by a cork-sniffing usage of "Tone Wood" get my eyes rolling quicker than just about anything when it comes to electric guitar discussion.

The mojo lives in those old pots, Gino. Highly sought after.

New pinch rollers make a world of difference and they're easy to replace. I don't envy you changing the felt and resetting the pad arms though. Did you get the felt from Streetly or from a local source?
