Epitaph new version with Gregs vocal

Epitaph new version with Gregs vocal

2015-02-02 by Andy Kinch

As a youngster, I remember hearing Epitaph for the first time and, like so many others here, this seminal moment started my love affair with the Mellotron.
As some of you know, I re-recorded the song based on the original arrangement a few months ago using my own voice on lead vocal. (no substitute for the great performance by Greg Lake sadly).
However, about a week ago I discovered a dodgy YouTube video containing the isolated vocal by GL, and it got me wondering would if it would fit, or could I make it fit without use of varispeed and other gimmicks?mp poor mp3
Well, I'm pleased to report that the finished track is here...

It's on YouTube. (If it's still there) search for Epitaph Greg Lake Isolated vocal.
Cheers, and thanks for the nice comments guys.

Tee, I did search for the original source file to work with, as the YouTube version isn't great. (Lo res mp3).
Also, it has been severely re-edited, so needed re-timing to compensate for the speed variables. The other problem, which I'm sure would also be on the source file, is that Fripp's guitar harmonics are all over the vocal on the bridge section, and there's brass on the outro, (which I was cunningly able to blend with my new take). There were also some nasty compression artifacts which are still there if you listen carefully. I did what I could to filter them out.
Boyhood fantasy drove me on to complete it with the limited technology at my disposal. It took an age! I was determined not to use any form of vari-speed or auto tune. Thankfully the original reverb had been preserved, so at least I didn't have to address that. In fact, I added a bit more on the choruses.
Cheers.

Great job, Andy ! I also liked the version with your vocals.

I had the same feelings when I was a youngster...

Except that if you listen closely you can hear the crappy mp3 compression artifacts all over the vocal. Shame I couldn't access the master!
Anyone have any ideas on how I could overcome the copyright situation on YouTube? Fair useage I think it's called.
This project didn't even occur to me until I saw some guy post the acapella vocal on YouTube. (I wonder how he got it?). Then my brain went into overdrive.....

Did you try emailing the guy who posted the isolated vocal to see if he
has a higher res version?

I didn't in the end. Having now finished it, even if I did have a higher res version, it would mean a hell of a lot of work re-timing it all over again, remixing etc. pretty pleased with the final result actually. Shame I'm not able to let the big wide world hear it.

Actually, I'll post the finished version on SoundCloud in a couple of days for those who are interested.
