Re: SFX?

It is an SFX console, obviously a rare black one. I know about this
one as I have played with it for a few hours about 5-6 years ago. It
is one a few that were painted black orinigally before they started
with the standard BBC grey finish. This one was used at ATV studios in
the UK and was the one used on "Emergency ward 10", a popular hospital
drama in the 60's. It had about 6 specially made up tapes in amongst
the rest which were a different colour and these had hospital type
sounds on that were not standard. The place in the video clip is the
National Media Museum's storage facility in Blackdyke Mill near
Bradford, Yorkshire. When I saw it it had a poorly left hand cycling
motor that had burnt out. Probably had it's clutch over tightened
which can jam the gearbox. The curator told me at the time they were
planning to display it but had not yet thought of a context -
apparently they still haven't.

A shame that such a beauty is relegated to a museum. I'm sure there
are plenty of folks here that could give it a better home.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] SFX?

2008-03-29 by JMoore6397@aol.com

Yes, It is a SFX console loaded with the original sound effects. The SFX was
a "foley machine" using analog tape built for the BBC. Many people used
these SFX sounds as a "sonic background" for movies and radio shows. SFX #006 was
used on the movie "The Deer Hunter" as the room acoustics were so bad in the
church where the couple got married and the reception locations that
producers had to rerecord the dialog while using various SFX recordings as the sonic
background. The actors actually recorded their dialog and watched the movie
at the same so there voices matched the movements of there mouths.

Some of the looping done over the years has been so awful - but a few voice
actors were geniuses - Paul Frees being one. Unfortunately so much
compression is used, especially in earlier days, that it becomes a dead
giveaway that it's a loop...Unless you were Disney, and then you compressed
the crap out of everything.

"Possibly the most famous example of the “tron” sound can be heard in the opening bars of “Strawberry Fields Forever”. This is the classic “tron” strings that is still widely used by artists today."

Well if it's as good as the blurb it will pretty awful, certainly the audiosamples sound pretty poor to me, no better than M-tron and three times the price. #1565 didn't cost much more and even in it's currently crippled state sounds better.

You are misreading it.

I think those demos they provide just have to be the biggest bunch of

some crackers to enjoy with them...

Re: [newmellotrongroup] SampleTron

I've just downloaded it and deleted it in record time. Honestly. Save yourselves and hide.

The big warning comes when you see the virtual keyboard stretching out at eight octaves. Surely to jeebus they haven't stretched the notes out to make them extend that far, have they?

Er. Yes they have.

Surely though the samples will be high quality and well recorded, with minimal tampering?

Er. Nio they are not. The strings/brass combination sound like they have been compressed through one of those dreadful little radio earpieces you could buy in the 1970s that turned everything into the sound of a fly in a jam jar.

Heavens. They at least they have sampled every note on the keyboard?

Er. No. The voices and Chamberlin cello samples have the familiar squeak of interpolation about them, even within the 35 note range of the originals.

Honestly. This shit isn't even worth the ten day trial period. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

Mike

This is the forerunner to SampleTron:

http://www.sonicreality.com/viewDetails.php?ProductID=220&view=info

Some interesting comments by the creator from kvraudio:

To use your Squids Tron you should get SampleTank. I originally
thought SampleTron would be able to read it but this seems to not be
the case. The sounds have different IDs completely. So, even the
sounds that came from Squids Tron inside SampleTron are actually
reprogrammed differently and have different IDs that SampleTron can
read (and ST) but not the other way around or it could get confusing.

Here's what is different about the way they are programmed for
SampleTron. A sort of "Best of Squids Tron" is within it but they are
programmed where they are both looped and non-looped 8 seconds all in
the same sound. You just turn a knob to get "sustain" (default
otherwise is "purist 8 seconds- at least on Mellotron and Chamberlin
sounds). I know we didn't include the non-looped Ampex and Chamberlin
stuff though. The 8 seconds is done by a hold function instead. For
the completely esoteric sound of the tape ending though your Squids
Tron will occassionally offer a quirky noise or two that isn't in
SampleTron. The extras like harmonium and toy piano are also not
included in SampleTron (but you get plenty of NEW extras like
Stylophone, VP330, 360 Systems etc.)

Over half of SampleTron is completely new (and basically the same as
Squids Tron Vol. 2). But it is important to note that Squids Tron
Vol. 2 is not coming out in SampleTank format! SampleTron IS Squids
Tron Vol. 2 (plus the best of Vol. 1) in SampleTank format. You will
see that Squids Tron Vol. 2 in Reason format and whatever other
formats we do will be the same price as your discounted upgrade from
Squids Tron Vol. 1 to SampleTron is. So there is no reason to make
two products (plus, trust me if you are a Squids Tron Vol. 1 user you
will WANT the updated programming we did on the sounds we chose from
it as they do more now... also some knobs to adjust noise amount and
tape artifacts... not to mention an inspiring vintage interface).

I bought that sample tank Squids set, wasn't very impressed with it,
plus installing the sampletank player was a pain in the arse.

Yet to hear anything that's better than the tronsonics DAT tape I
bought in the late eighties, I wish I'd bought more of them.
