Just curious, has anyone on this list ever been able to sus out and recreate ( more or less ) what Pinder is playing on 'The Word' from ISOTLC? Don't think it's just random noodling, nor that he lost the chord sheet : ) Cheers

Hey Hessel- There is a very low mellotron played on the poem "The Word" (which is better revealed on the SACD extras, and is probably 3-violins), is this what you refer to? Or are you talking about the 'tron in "Om"? That mystifies me, too. Maybe it's 3-violins with a bass organ. -Bruce D. --- On Sun, 7/13/08, Hessel Herder <hessel@soundscape.nl> wrote:

Hi Bruce, Yeah, the SACD version of "The Word" has got the tron more upfront. Been trying to figure it out, difficult.Sounds really nice though. Maybe there's some bootleg version which has got just the tron part, without Edge's pottery Cheers,H

"If there is one thing I hate about Moodies albums, it's the spoken word. Claptrap from start to finish. Discuss." Of course you are, my bright little star... Yes, I know it's generally guff, but I'll stick up for the spoken interludes. It's possibly a 'Midlands thing' involving all sorts of odd personal nostalgic reflexes.. I like the idea of these would-be cosmic Brummies (with their big 'tashes and their nifty dance moves) -who all look like guests at my parents' wedding- getting the wrong end of the stick regarding Leary and the Astral Plane. They may have been pretentious, they may have just suffered from the fact that Midlands English isn't necessarily thought of as an obvious accent of poetry and there's something inherently sensible about the sound of thoughtful Brum. Hang on a mo.. Every poem ever read to me sounded like that. It's the sound of HOME and probably the sound of Shakespeare. (I may well be on shaky ground there, I'faith..) Bless'em! They were working it out for themselves and boldly went where no man could be arsed to go before. I can't even SEE tarmac without the Moodies coming to mind. Come on, for all their naivety they did at least have a go. Wave a flag! I don't actually mind the ropey bits that much as they always sounded like they were going for it. Which is probably more important sometimes. Moustaches and all. Whilst tripping. Christ on a bike. Claptrap from start to finish. Discusst. Call me daft (you wouldn't be the first), but I always found that the stuff the Moodies did between songs was more interesting than the songs themselves. Same thing with Hawkwind. Though the tunes were usually rather catchy, they really didn't have much to offer, and the lyrics (here we go again) were banal in extremis (says he who, only by the purest of flukes, has ever composed one song - listen to "This is It" at http://www.myspace.com/jimab). Hi Owen Have you been able to discern and more or less recreate what Pinder is playing in "The Word" or do you know if there's a version out there with just the tron part?

I might have a go at figuring it out when I get time (managed "Out and In" a year or so ago, which was fun). O

Oops, what I meant to say was "3-violins in unison with a 'tron bass organ". It sounds like something Pinder could play side by side on the MK2. But the bass viol is a definite possiblity. -Bruce D. --- On Tue, 7/15/08, thinkingalouduk <owen@thinking-aloud.co.uk> wrote:

I'm replying to my own posts now... Going back to The Word, here's a scored version. No guarantees it's note perfect, but I played it in parallel with the original and it seems to fit quite well. There are no bars in the original, so I've grouped each chord phrase into a bar for clarity. Tempo varies! Add tons of reverb and judicious use of volume pedal. (Also in the original, it's in stereo, with one part lagging behind the other a little in places, giving some interesting intermediate sounds.) The last chord isn't heard in the original album version. http://www.thinking-aloud.co.uk/temp/TheWord.jpg O --- In newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com, "thinkingalouduk" <owen@...> wrote:
