You can always replace it. It isn't very fun to remove the mechanism and recenter the pot for 0v but it is well worth it to put in a new one. I always replace them (Mouser no. 31VC401-F) and it stops jumping around, actually has a small dead band, and helps autotune actually work. The Oberheims don't disconnect the pitch lever when autotuning so if there is any instability it craps out.
