Before you go through too much hassle, I would make certain that the power supply you're using is spitting out a clean 9 volts. When I first got my Strummer I was having a lot of issues with freezing and random restarting. I measured the stock power supply to find that it was providing close to 14 volts! I swapped for a regulated 9v wallwart and all my problems disappeared. It might be worth a shot to try that first.
