OB12

2010-12-16 by LarryS

Has anyone come across or had any experience with the somewhat short-lived
OB-12?

It seemed to take a beating among the analog purists... but I never actually
got my fingers on one.

Anyone know much about it?

Pleased to say I've had an Big Blue OB12 for a number of years now and love it. Pads are warm, soft and fresh and I like lead sounds (with some tweaking).

I'm lucky enough to have an OB-Xa 8 voice and an OB12 although they are a bit chalk and cheese compared to each other.

True the OB12 is not a true Oberheim however I believe it is where the evolution of Oberheim was heading during the digital revolution.

This board is not just about whizzy and wierd sounds although easy enough to programme them. The Pads sounds sit brilliant in a mix.

The downside was that Viscount dropped it without the benefit of decent pre programmed sounds which tbh are dreadful. The driving software was glitchy and full of bugs (Viscount attention to detail again) although the upgrade made a massive difference for the better for that.

I tend to partner the OB12 with my Roland JD800 in recording. Slap the OB-Xa ontop of that and Wow!

My two pennyworth

Thumbs up to the Analogue Purists i'm a mix of both and would not part with my OB12 the BIG BLUE.

I might consider selling my OB-12 for the right price. I love it, but not using it much. I am in a Rush cover band and bought it mostly for the "Subdivisions" sound. We have a new keyboardist with his own gear now and I play guitar and bass pedals exclusively. The OB-12 is in great condition except for the LCD screen which is fading out and hard to read now. Any offers?

I got mine when Musician's Friend was blowing them out for $600. I accept it for what is, and I think it's great! Maybe I'm just easy to please. I love my Matrix 6R and my 4-voice, too (not necessarily in that order!)
BTW, are you aware that there is a group here named "FriendsofOB12"? It's not as active as this group, but you'll probably get a few responses, if you post there.
