[oberheim] Matrix 1000 editor that works in XP or Mac OSX???

2012-08-07 by Jill Saphic

Hello
I'm not an Oberheim expert or anything,
but I use one of the black 1000's onstage every night.
It's in my rack with a few other things.
(yes, it's been rebuilt, but original firmware chip)
and I've just purchased another non funtioning black one.
I have heard of this "crashing" thing LOTS when using one of the various
ED/LIB's you can find online, and I have always heard the same answer.
It crashes with apple, any apple.
And that's that. From every article, message board, and forum
I could find so far, it's the same story.
EVEN if you are booted up in some type of XP mode.
The EASY solution I've read about is pretty much what I use.
"Acquire" an older cheapo laptop doesn't have 2 B at all fast,
from eBay or elsewhere, and try XP. If that one doesnt work for you,
then one must acquire and old cheapo copy of WIN98.
I use an old IBM T-42,(got that for 90.00 USD on eBay)
and WIN98 that my mum had lying around from days gone by,
and use it exclusively to edit or add sounds (patches)
to my M 1000 with Matrix 2001, and my TX-802.
(actually, if I'm really bored at rehearsal sometimes ,
I watch CSI Miami FLV files on it propped up on my top keyboard... LOL!!!)
I've NEVER had a crash when using that combination.
My other gear is much more current and works with my everyday
laptop & Windows 7.
I would think some genius out there has a workaround this apple problem,
but I've never read or heard of it.
As for that Jsynth.lib, I know I just saw that to download somewhere on
one of the Oberheim pages out there. Someone uploaded
an old copy they had found on their hard drive I think.
I will actually take a few minutes this weekend and see if I have
that one on of my memory sticks. I think I remember downloading
it late one night. But I could B wrong. If I find it, I'll put it in the files section.
Did you already check the files section?
My question 2 U is:
I've seen that demo for the OB 6000 software
and went to their site and saw the 40.00 price.
Is it worth the money over the free ones?
Does it have a lot more features or animated graphics or something?
Or are you just using the static demo like I have?
see ya...

Hi, I'm desperately trying to find an editor for my matrix 1000. I've tried OB6000 and all the others I can find online (Midiquest, Matrix2001 seems to have disappeared as well as something called jsynth.lib)

OB6000 and the others I've tried all crash my Matrix1000 when I import patches. It's really frustrating.

My model is a black Matrix1000 firmware 1.03 does anyone know if it's related to the firmware version? I heard they went up to 1.11 so maybe mine is an early version.

I am running Mac OSX lion but can also run Windows XP on it so any platform is good.

But always the same issue - some of them half work, but in the end they ALL crash the Matrix when receiving sysex patch dumps and or/editing.
Driving me nuts.

Any help MUCH appreciated thank you!!!!

Hi there,
I don't know if it's of any use to you guys but here are a couple of other options, pardon me if they were already mentioned.

I haven't used Matrix 1000 or MatrixEd, but I can say I've used most of the other ones you guys talked about and the only totally reliable solution I have found is using the Cubase patch script panel found on the Cykong site. It is also the nicest GUI I have come across for editing the Matrix.

Note that you don't need the newest version of Cubase to use it, in fact you could probably find a 'lite' version for free or next to nothing hanging around - like the demos you get with certain hardware for example.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I can get my hands on a windows laptop sure, but I can't find the editor 'Matrix2001' anywhere on the net. I think the site has gone. If its not breaking any kind of forum/group rules or anything would you be kind enough to share it with me, or point me to a place on the net where I can find it? Thanks!

Matrix 1000 editor that works in XP or Mac OSX???

2012-08-10 by Jill Saphic

Hello check sum,
You didn't answer my question.
you know, the one obout that OB 6000 editor?
at the end of my reply?

I could probobaly find my file of my download
of 2001, or the URL, but I wouldn't be able to share the code to
unlock the demo into the full program.
I would think you can pay for it like I did over the net
after you install the demo, and they send you the activation code.
I've never seen a crack for any of the editors.
I'm off on sunday, I ll give it a look then!

2012-08-10 by Jill Saphic

Hello Ady
thank you 4 the info and the links on the cubase and other things.
When you mention the super GUI,
does it have nice windows to see waveforms,
and matrix mod routes and things?
Do you by any chance have any screen shots lying around from your work?

Hi Jill,
I'm not sure I'd call it a super GUI, but it's thorough and has some character, and best of all it's free and reliable.
If you go to the link I posted for the Cykong website and click on 9;Oberheim Matrix 1000' you'll see it.

Hi,
I have EXACTLY the same problem and setup as you-Lion/Win XP/M1000 with firmware 1.03
I can save you a lot of wasted hours-believe me I tried everything out there and yes they all crash my M1000. I didn't bargain on such a headache and a waste of time when my matrix 1000 came in the mail...it really depressed me for a while.
Basically you have two options : 1) As I think someone said, there's a Cubase editor out there - I run it on boot camp xp on a laptop and it's the only editor that won't crash the Matrix. Unfortunately it only has mod matrix presets so you can't edit everything but you can control the majority of the parameters. Sysex Librarian for Osx will load and save banks without crashing. That's about it, I tried them all nothing else worked :(

2) (my current plan) sell your matrix and buy another with newer firmware.
I believe (albeit with no evidence) the 1.03 firmware can't handle Sysex too well (actually none of them do even the later ones the CPU is slow but at least the 1.11 versions don't seem to crash, for others anyway.)
Updating your firmware is not pratical if you're like me- it involves using an EPROM burner or sourcing an updated EPROM from somewhere (how on earth?)
It's an old synth, sadly you can't just download an update via midi file or something!!!!

Re: [oberheim] Re: Matrix 1000 editor that works in XP or Mac OSX???

2012-09-25 by Peter Mörck

Getting an updated EPROM shouldn't be too hard if you have some friendly people in your country (which is?) that can send you an EPROM for a modest fee.
Perhaps someone can even help you replace the chip in the synth.
It's really simple but of course you need to take the necessary precautions regarding high voltage, static electricity, etc...
I'm sure someone can do it for free or very little money for you.
In any case, I can't imagine it will cost you more than the hassle and cost of actually selling and buying another unit :)
BR,
Peter

I'm not sure about your particular editors with PC's or Mac's but I have a lot of issues with using todays faster PC's to send sysex to my older synths. The better USB midi interfaces are built for speed and can easily send too much data for the Matrix to handle. This alone will result in incomplete banks and corrupted patches. I use Midi-Ox in windows to send sysex banks. Slow down the transfer with delays and use smaller buffers by configuring the sysex option. Sometimes buffers as small as 32 or 64 bytes are needed with 100 milliseconds or more delay between buffers. Basically you don't care how long it takes to send a bank of patches as long as the M-1000 can write them to ram.

I can make an updated V1.11 eprom for your M-1000. There are also sellers listed on Ebay that offer this service if you have the bin file. Oberheim even though they may be defunct owns the copyright for this firmware so it's not a profit making venture. I only charge for the cost of the eprom and shipping. Usually $12.00 US total. Contact me offlist for the details.

I have sometimes had to break out the Joystick port to MIDI cable with newish PC's, so that I can use MPU-401. I have found that this older way is usually more compatible with older equipment.

Hi,
I have EXACTLY the same problem and setup as you-Lion/Win XP/M1000 with firmware 1.03
I can save you a lot of wasted hours-believe me I tried everything out there and yes they all crash my M1000. I didn't bargain on such a headache and a waste of time when my matrix 1000 came in the mail...it really depressed me for a while.

Just out of professional curiosity, how does it crash? Ie. what does it look like when it's crashed - which LEDs are on? Does it respond to MIDI messages (notes or program change)? Does it respond to at least some buttons? What is on the numeric display? IIRC M-1000 does not recognize MIDI Reset All (FF) command, but does it still broadcast Active Sense (FE) while in crashed state?

Thanks.

BTW,
Is it illegal to post the Matrix-1000 1.11 (or other) EPROM images on the Files section of the group?
I saw there were some OB-8 EPROM images there so someone else has uploaded firmware before, but that doesn't mean it's ok :)

Oberheim Matrix-1000 EPROMS.rar has been in files section under Matrix Doc's since 2008...

I'm not sure about your particular editors with PC9;s or Mac's but I have a lot of issues with using todays faster PC's to send sysex to my older synths.

Oh, hah. Sorry :)
I didn't notice that folder.
It does look a little inconspicuous and generic with "Matrix Doc's" ..
Which Matrix?...
Docs?
Anyway, so the 1.11 EPROM along with the preset EPROM is there :)

Oberheim Matrix-1000 EPROMS.rar has been in files section under Matrix Doc's since 2008...

BTW,
Is it illegal to post the Matrix-1000 1.11 (or other) EPROM images on the Files section of the group?
I saw there were some OB-8 EPROM images there so someone else has uploaded firmware before, but that doesn't mean it's ok :)
