Do I need to recap my Matrix 6 power supply??

Do I need to recap my Matrix 6 power supply??

2015-03-16 by wbkennedy1@...

I've been having this problem with my Matrix 6 for a while where the screen flickers on and off and when I am playing the synth and this happens, the sound goes in and out too. Its been seeming to get a lot worse recently and I need to figure out a way to fix it! Im going on tour in a few weeks and this is my main synth on stage.. here is a video example of what is happening. Its kinda hard to tell that the sound is cutting in and out too when the screen flickers, but trust me, it does. And it is very annoying, especially during important parts of songs!

It seems like a power supply issue, so what should i do next to fix it? I was thinking recapping the PS. Ive never done that to a synth, but I do lots of other electronic work so Im guessing it shouldnt be that hard if i get the right parts. Is there a way to tell for sure if the capacitors are bad or not?

thank you for any help you can provide!!

Interesting problem. With a scope you could set it to trigger if the supply dips a little,
And see which supply is dipping. If the dips last long enough, assuming they are dips, then a multimeter may be able to show them as well. You could recap the supply, but that may not fix the problem. What if one of the voltage regulators is flaky? The display uses a separate winding off of the power transformer to create the high voltage that it needs. Seems like that voltage is dropping out, maybe. Or some other display issue. If the cpu voltage was dropping, seems like it might crash, which would look very different. It wouldnt come right back as it does in your video. Maybe the 5v analog suppply is dipping? Best to try to figure out which one, then just fix that one.

Also, I noticed that the display and voice bd use +5VA and the CPU uses+5VB, so probably you would want to focus on +5VA first.

I was touring with mine when the same problem occurred.
The synth repair man I go to for my old gear replaced all of the caps,
including the 2 big BLUE ones on the power supply board by the transformer.
but the soldering job from the original Oberheim factory was off he said,
and he showed my the holes in the plastic circuit board where the wires from the caps
come through and get soldered had enlarged, and couldn't hold the connections
for long after being tossed around from gig to gig.
* LUCKILY*, he found me another power supply board on eBay, including the big BLUE caps,
(that look like "C" size batteries,) all in one piece and popped it in.
Everything was perfect after that.
just FYI...

Interesting. When I bought my Matrix 6R it didn't work. The problem turned out to be that one lead of one of those big caps
had come un-soldered from the pc bd. I just resoldered it and thatfixed it, but I haven't moved the unit around much since. Maybeit wouldn't hold up on the road.
