Oberheim Xpander firmware

Oberheim Xpander firmware

2015-04-19 by khatri.naeem786@...

Hi,

I've just acquired an Xpander that has some issues (like having a voice processor that needs replacing).

I'm in the process of figuring out if I need to upgrade the firmware. Through the menu: I get Main version 1.2, Voice version 2.0, and cassette 4.4 displayed.

My research indicates the highest version for main was 1.2 and voice is 1.4.

Is the 2.0 I'm seeing for voice a typo in the code? The only two labelled EPROMs on the voice board have "CAS 1.4 0" and "CAS 1.4 1" on them so I want to know if maybe earlier firmware a "2.0" typo or if the aforementioned EPROMs are actually the 1.4 voice firmware.

Thanks.

Cross referencing with the .bin files that are available from synthparts.com: the two "CAS" chips are the two chips for the Voice firmware. It looks like the tape and voice version typo are likely caused by the faulty Voice Processor.

FYI- the U.S. made Xpander uses the 68B09P. Mine looks like it has a Rev. A voice board. I ordered the 68B09EP, as I read elsewhere that replacing it fixed the problem on a Japanese XP-1. It looks like the Japanese and U.S. versions use different CPU chips, as the "E" stands for externally clocked.
