OB-Mx

2010-01-03 by olliebongo@btopenworld.com

I have an OB-Mx with 2 voice cards (i.e. four voices) and I love it even though it is somewhat wayward. It was sugested to me recently that the problems I'm experiencing may be caused by a mismatch of voice cards from different batches. I understand that those produced in an earlier batch may not match well with those from a later batch. If this is ringing any bells with other OB-Mx users I wondered if a swap might be an idea.

Any thoughts?

i have an OB-Mx with all twelve voices and one with ten voices.

the complete one i got from Jack at Future Music in Los Angeles (Highland Park and Sunset Blvd. before that). he told me that there was a later batch of voice cards that were manufactured in Korea. for a while, these Korean guys kept bringing them in to him to sell.

he said that in his experience, the cards could be hit and miss in terms of their output levels matching. he said he'd work out the best matched set of cards for the OB-Mx that he shipped to me.

this was all years ago so, unfortunately, he hasn't had OB-Mx cards available in years.

Ah, that makes some sense. My extra voice card took a few years to track down and came via eBay from Korea. Even with the limitations this slightly wobbly card imposes it's still my favourite machine and may be the cause of my general dislike of the digital perfection of analogue modelling and plug-ins. I noticed a couple of years back someone got over £500 on eBay for a voice card and for a few months they were changing hands more regularly than I have seen before or since but at prices that were out of reach for me (in fact the were selling for twice what I paid for the whole synth).

I still keep my eyes peeled in case one pops up. I am very jealous of your two machines, I must say.

Cheers
Ollie

i think the OB-Mx got a bad rep as an unfinished product that didn't really work so demand for them and prices were low.

actual owners knew better though and rushed to complete their systems. demand for cards got to a point where it was much better to part out individual cards rather than sell an OB-Mx loaded. now voice cards are extremely rare.

about four years ago, i found a person in L.A. in this situation and was going to get a card from him to finish off my second OB-Mx but to my regret, i was traveling in and out of the city too much to make it happen.
