How old's my OB-X?

How old's my OB-X?

2010-10-08 by Chris Wareham

Hi folks,

Many thanks to the people who helped out with WAV files of the factory
presets a few months back. I'm now trying to work out how old my OB-X
might be, as I think it's probably a pretty early one. It doesn't have
the name on top in a large OB-Xa style serif font, rather a small name
in a distinctly blocky font above the keyboard. It is also an original
four voice specimen, as confirmed by the Oberheim identity tag on the
back. It's serial number 793401, and I'm wondering if anyone knows how
to date an OB-X based on this information.

Regards,

Chris

That is an early one. From 1979. Can you take a pic?

Hi Doug,

Attached are a couple of pictures - unfortunately they are quite grainy
as the only digital camera I have is the one on my mobile phone, but
hopefully they show enough details for identification purposes. I'll
try to borrow a proper digital camera and take some better pictures
during the week.

Regards,

Chris

Great, thanks! Please take some internal pics too if you can. If you want I could host the pics on my site. I'm pretty sure those really early OB-Xs had a different, more troublesome processor board.

I'm borrowing a decent digital camera from work, so I'll take some shots of the
Obie from each side, close ups of the makers label, and shots of the interior.
As for the processor board, you could be correct about it being troublesome. I've
never played another OB-X, but on mine the editing can be a little bit
temperamental, requiring multiple adjustments to each potentiometer before the
changes will actually take.

Now if I could only stop my cat from walking on the keys ... the critter has
caused four of them to need repairing so far!
