Hi, Yes, do check the mod that CJP suggested. 2 x3v cells? As long as you stop it being charged by the supply voltage (resistor and diode mod) then a single lithium CR2032 cell in a holder will suffice for well over 5 years! Check carefully what you have done and use a DMM on the low resistance range to make sure there are no low resistance paths to ground or short circuits.
