lithium vs. ni-cad battery?

lithium vs. ni-cad battery?

2009-12-22 by r_j_d_2.phila

hi folks, i am having an issue with my P6: i have put 2 3V lithium batteries in, hard soldered, and the machine will hold patches for a day. then, it dies, and the battery drops to about .1V.

i have been told that the circuit actually needs to have a ni-cad battery. will nickel-metal-something work? my local battery place has a chargeable nickel-something or other battery, but its not "nickel cadmium".

or do i have another problem not battery related? fyi, D15 and R91 is replaced as 1n4148's, and the elec capacitor removed, per the old crow site instructions. thanks so much for the help!-rj

You can pickup a nicad battery for a cordless phone from radio shack which
will work and is cheap. The charging circuit for some other type of
rechargable is going to be different.

are the diodes in the right direction?

Hi,

Yes, do check the mod that CJP suggested. 2 x3v cells? As long as you stop
it being charged by the supply voltage (resistor and diode mod) then a
single lithium CR2032 cell in a holder will suffice for well over 5 years!
Check carefully what you have done and use a DMM on the low resistance range
to make sure there are no low resistance paths to ground or short circuits.
Sounds like you batteries were partially or dead shorted.

Cheers,
Andy

yes. i've checked this multiple times, and even replaced them the 2nd time i swapped the battery.

i guess what i really need to know is this: would a lithium battery work in the circuit, or no? would it require modification to do so? i thought i could just drop in a lithium, but apparently, i have been told that's not the case. trying to confirm or deny this. thanks-rj

is anyone successfully using lithium battery in P6?

I have repaired well over a dozen KLM-367s and have always used a Lithium
coin cells as a replacement. A CR2032 in a holder is all that is required.
You just need to take out the resistor next to D15 and insert an 1n 4148
with the anode (the stripe) facing down towards the edge of the board in its
place. Like I said, you should check for low resistance / shorts around this
area if you are running down batteries very quickly.

I also did this with mine, as per old crow. Never had a problem.
