midi retrofit options / sysex data?

midi retrofit options / sysex data?

2010-11-14 by synthland123

hey folks,

it seems the midi retrofit list on the group pages is out of date.

anyone know of any other retrofits currently available or any in development?

we've installed the elektroservis one in a few polysixes and it works well though it's pretty basic and the pitch bend is stepped. this stepped bend is actually a pretty cool effect though it'll probably annoy anyone looking for a standard smooth bend.

i was also wondering if anyone's found sysex data of the korg sounds online? i've found wav files for us with tape dump but we've had lousy results with tape dumps to vintage instruments and there's no doubt people would benefit from a sysex file of factory data.

please CC replies to minime123 at onebox dot com as i dont check this email much.

thanks

I think the project is still active (just)...

hi andy

thanks for the reply but actually, i dont think this option's available anymore. i emailed the designer, johannes, about this a while ago and he said:

"Thank you for your interest, but I have to tell you that I do not have these kits anymore. If there is demand, I might consider to do another batch of PCBs, but this will be PCB and EPROM only. If you are still interested let me know (there are already a few interests)."

maybe if other group members are interested, we can convince him to do another run? i like the idea of having a noise generator on my personal polysix and im sure many customers who buy polysix's from us would appreciate that feature as well.

thanks

Hi all,

There WAS additional demand and I DID a new run of the PCBs. So you are
free and welcome to go ahead. As I said, I only do the DIY-version (I
cannot afford the spare time to do the full-blown kits), but I am
currently in negotiation with a member of this list who wants to build
the kits.

Re: [PolySix] Re: midi retrofit options / sysex data?

2010-11-16 by Andrew Jury

Hi M,

As Johannes just explained in his post there is more than likely going to be
a renaissance in these kits due to new demand for them. If all goes well in
the next few days I will be taking over the mantel and will be able to
supply fully constructed kits and/or offer a fitting service for UK based
owners (others welcome if you can stand the postage!). As a guideline kit
prices will be a little less than Kenton used to charge, but this is to be
finalized. I will put more information up on my website/post here when I
have finalized the finer points with Johannes. If you or anyone else for
that matter is interested in obtaining one of these kits then please drop me
a private message.

Cheers,
Andy

Re: [PolySix] midi retrofit options / sysex data?

2010-11-16 by Malte Rogacki

Something that came to mind recently:

The factory MIDI kit essentially "takes over" some of the functionality of
the KLM-367A if I'm not mistaken (for example, RAM and processor). Wouldn't
it be possible to create a sort of hybrid board of the KLM-367 and the MIDI
board that combines this functionality into a single PCB? Some kind of
redesign?

Re: [PolySix] midi retrofit options / sysex data?

I guess so, although I am not convinced all this silicon and discrete
components would fit on a board the same size as the Œ367! If I was
redesigning the Œ367 then I would also be tempted to use a CPU with better
I/O expansion than the Z80 which takes over the the 8048 when the kit is
fitted. Then you could dump all the 40 pin PPIs. Also you¹d be able to open
up flash RAM for patch storage, instead of SRAM, etc Bottom line is that:

1. Eventually you¹ll have designed something that is no longer a Polysix
2. The R and D time for this is massive!

Hey, you could even sample of the voice from a Polysix and then play it back
from a ROM instead of using all those horrid old SSM chips! Hold on, got to
go, people are starting to throw stones at me!

Cheers,
Andy
