well actually the 12 bit sampling capabilities of the P2K are pretty 
good and not necessarily all the gritty 

If you have to get one, consider a Prophet 2002 rack unit for around 
$100 +/- that's not a lot of bucks

the other thing to consider is to find a (now discontinued) Alesis 
BitRman which is a stereo bit reduction effects box with which you 
can dial in the trash/grit of your hearts content on any synth you've 
got, I'm sure there are other bit reduction boxes out there too!

as an example I put the BitrMan on an old Yamaha TX81Z (which is so 
cliche 70's) and then crank it and it is way way sick
