The p2k OS is kept on ROM, not floppy.

Sounds like you have a dead machine?

WCS (www.winecountrysequential.com) sell a ROM upgrade, which fixes
several issues with the old ROMs as well. However, I consider it
extremely unlikely that your ROM has gone bad - ROM chips are about the
least likely part in a computer to go bad. It is far more likely that
some other part has failed. What exactly is happening if you power on?

If if i had it to upload there is no way of reading or writing p2k disks from a PC or MAC.

Is there a way for you to make a copy and send it to me???
I know it's quiet boring but it will help me a lot!

I don't have it.
And even if if i did, it's useless without the service manual.

As far as I know, it can't be duplicated on any known computer, nor on
the P2000 itself. Going by their web site, even Wine Country don't have
them on stock any more - which probably implies that the one development
machine capable of creating them is dead and gone.

what *does* it do on power-up?

I've never heard of this diagnostics disc, and I'm reasonably confident that
tim wallhead (used to be the service engineer at argent's in london, where I
bought my 2002+ and found a mellotron....) would've told me about it while I
was raiding their 2000 library, if he thought it was useful. I don't think it
would have been for system checks anyway, more likely it was for adjusting
the analogue circuitry, i.e. a bunch of waveforms, with the patches set up to
check open and closed filters and amps, crosstalk, the mod depth of the lfo
and stuff like that.

the o/s is either working or not. somewhere I have an old eprom with v3 on it
but it's unlikely to help much, besides being not the latest version.

anyway, the 2000/2002 should make noises based on it's rom waveforms even if
there isn't even a floppy drive in the same room. and if it's not the rom
(which is quite unlikely, as has been mentioned) then it's most likely to be
the system clock (the crystal that runs the whole machine; my sx16 has got
through three before I gave up with it) or the cpu that's been fried.

wine country ought to be able to help- they seem quite happy to enter into
lengthy dialogue over these machines. sadly, though, many of the more
proprietary bits are now permanently unavailable and my 2000, with it's dead
kybd controller, is likely to be just a source of parts for the 2002+ now.
:-( like you can't imagine. I loved that keyboard. you can stuff your akais
and emus, this was a great sounding sampler.

the good bit about this is that I'll be passing on the surplus manual, along
with some schemos when they arrive, to another list-member (hi ben!) who has
a bit more time than I to scan or whatever so you can all see them.

Prophet Manual

2002-06-13 by eudanem

Duncan has very kindly supplied me with all the manuals(technical and
non-technical) (received today) that he could find on the condition
that I sort the info. into a useable form and post it up in the file
section - first instalment is up already - the Operation Summary
section (which is very straightforward indeed) which all scanned and
OCR'd with relatively few probs. due to the decent quality of the
copy sent to me (thank you, Duncan). The rest of the manual(s) will
not be quite so rapid in appearing due to their immense bulk... but I
shall do what I can to keep the sections flowing forth.

Duncan also sent me a copy of a CD of his, which made a pleasantly
ambient accompaniment to the scanning and editing process - most
agreeable.

Next posts will be 'identifying your mods.' and the tech.manual (this
latter will be an interesting one - lots of schematics to cope with,
so expect some .gif files)

There are already some poor scans of the p2k schems on my site:

But decent quality scans would be appreciated by all!

I have to tell you that this is MUCH APPRECIATED! My friend who promised me
the manual some months ago has not made good (yet)so with this operations
manual, I can now start doing some samples on it (which is where the meat of
any sampler comes in..you can't rely wholly on 3rd party sample discs! ;-)

a Big Thanks from all of us!!

<< first instalment is up already >>

sterling work, ben- a man of your word. I can't believe you got it done so
soon. well, as he says, there's plenty more to look forward to, but that op
summary has even got me reaching for the drawer of floppies.

I can't take my 2002 all the way to california for this gig in november, much
as I'd like to take it home for a visit, but I'm going to load samples from
it into a ram card for my alesis s4 module. maybe I'll figure out a way to
upload some wavs of the factory sounds I have on some of them. the disc
format and the 12bit files are too proprietary, I fear, but the sounds are
pretty good- they'll survive resampling if it's 16/44- and patch ("map")
details can always be written out longhand or scanned from the blanks in the
manual.

if there's a list for that s4, I haven't found it yet, but there's a guy in
greece who wrote a tutorial on this rather idiosyncratic operation and it
works a treat, so I wrote and thanked him. his example has now been followed
for the p2k and I'm glad to have helped. now for those discs.....

<< lots of schematics to cope with >>

I almost forgot- wine country told me a few things to try before confirming
my suspicion that my 2000's keyboard controller chip was fried. what they
didn't tell me- and they knew that I deal with electronics for a living- was
that a number of other, less rare components might be the cause of the
problem (stuck notes, since you ask).

I'd gone way past the cleaning of the rubber pads under the keys by this
time, and the contacts all looked ok, though this had been a hire machine (ex
music lab in 1991, as-seen, with a busted floppy drive, £350. I found the
receipt in the manual. I had a broken thumb when I collected it.....).
so I exchanged a few e-mails with them, but now I think about it, I reckon
the guy who answers this correspondence was used to giving bad news to people
looking for curtis chips for their p5's. I didn't even bother them when my
pro-1 blew up, I just bought a new filter chip from tim wallhead.
so anyway, I'm going to have a poke around and see if it comes to life. has
anyone else had intermittent, random stuck notes? what's the mixture of
2000's and 2002's out there?
