formatting disks

formatting disks

2003-03-05 by snmcur

My p2k is running o.s. 3 and has the double sided drive - late serial
number. Bought some blank dsdd disks from route 66 studios, and I
get the "IF" error when trying to format. The manual suggests that
any blank will do, then recommends buying disks from a Mac store.
Has anyone experienced this problem, not being able to format a disk
because of "improper format"?
p.s. loads disks from wine country without issue.

i dont have a p2k, nor am i really familiar with double sided disks,
but if you can use them in a standard pc floppy drive, you could use
a program like copyqm to rip an image file of your working formatted
disks, and then apply that image to the new disks, which would then
be perfect 'formatted' copies of the source disk you used. i can
send you the program (an old dos program) if you'd like to give it a
try. it's worked for me with my p3k when certain disks didn't want
to format properly.

That sounds great. Is it small enough to email?

Just a quick note, these disk imaging programs won't work
on the P2K, it uses a different type of floppy controller
chip. CopyQM and other utils like Teledisk are
readily available on the web, just do a google search.

Cheers,
              Nev.

http://www.inetix.fr/sites_heberg/prophet3000/

the link on the bottom of that page is the copyqm program. it's
fairly straight forward once you get it running, but just ask if you
have any problems figuring it out. i'm not sure why it wouldn't
work, if you're simply making a perfect duplicate of a factory
sequential disk (which you could then just delete the samples from
and use like a formatted blank, as i've done with the p3k before),
the p2k shouldn't really be able to tell the difference. good luck.

This won't work.
Prophet 2000/2002 disks are formatted differently at hardware level
(apparently).

sorry.
