Floppy file format of P2000?

Floppy file format of P2000?

2001-12-16 by petermeyer_99

Does anybody know the floppy disk file format the P2000 uses? I'd
like to write a converter program to read all my old disks and
transfer them to my new sparkling HALion... :-)

The formatting is proprietry.
The disk control chip is a weird one.
You'll never be able to read the disks from a PC/Mac using only
software.
All you can do is transfer out the raw samples over MIDI.

The disk controller isn't wierd, just old. It's a western digital 1771.
The problem may be that it's single density. I don't know if the
current PC controllers implement single density. You won't be able to
read the disk through the dos file system. Your only hope is to access
the PC hardware directly or perhaps through a low level BIOS interface.
It would be easier to just dump it over midi.

If you're looking for compatible floppy drives, I found that an "older style"
high density drive (a Sony model) (small pin power connectors - compatible with
the prophet power connector)worked just fine in my prophet (after a bit of
random jumper-fiddling) and the prophet drive controller would format both high
and low density disks through it - but you have to tape over the window opposite
the write protect slider at the bottom of the disk to fool the drive into
believing the HD disk is a single-density disk or it won't recognize it for
read/write purposes (it doesn't matter if you have taped over this before or
after you format the floppy, however, for some reason)- you don't need to find
rare low-density disks, which is just as well...
