Is it possible to configure a specific sound/sample to play
monophonically (only one voice playing at the same time)?

yes. I can't remember all the details, but if the machine is in midi
mode 4 (one sample per midi channel) & the voice mode is on "FO" for
"forced output", then you will get one sample playing through one
voice (& coming out of one hole in the back if you have the 8-way kit
installed).

I think it's possible to use the "FO" mode in other midi modes too.
there's an appendix to the original manual, probably came with the
8-way output kit, that describes how to set up hi-hat sounds so that
two samples compete for one voice. I will hunt it out this weekend
when I'm back at r.m.i. HQ.
