Very Sick P2K

Very Sick P2K

2011-02-22 by martythevampire

Hi Everyone,

I finally found some time to pull my P2K from storage to see if I can resurrect it.

I stopped using it about 10 years with one of the voices dropping out.

I've recently powered it up and the ROM presets are all playing the same sound and it refuses to stop as if the envelopes are staying on permanently. I have removed the rom and tried letting it reset itself but that didn't seem to work. The ROM version is v2.00 (or 2.01).

My multimeter battery was almost dead so I havent checked the power supply rails yet but plan to do so tonight.

Voice 4 is the one cutting out and having swapped around the voice chips (3379s)to see if its the voice chip that is dead or the 40174s on that voice.

Amazingly the drive still works well. I can load in samples from disc but the notes all hang on these too. Adjusting the envelope settings makes no difference. The keyboard works and plays all the notes correctly so its not the keyboard controller or as far as I can tell it isn't.

If anyone can offer any suggestions for the ROM issue or the hanging notes, please let me know. I can replace the 40174s cheaply and easily enough but if there is something else that seems beyond repair I may just have to look out for another one.

I'm in the UK, if shipping wasn't so expensive I would send it to Wine Country to have a look at it but it will be cheaper to just get another one by the time the shipping both ways has been covered.

Many thanks, Martin

marty-
this is a 2000, right, with the onboard keyboard? & you get stuck notes as soon as you play the keyboard.... mine went the same way, & this does not have a happy ending.

WC suggested I try the midi in, play it from another keyboard & see if it does the same. if it is ok, then you have a dead keyboard controller IC, like I did, & there aren't any out there. it's one of the few custom ICs in the thing.

I still have my 2002, but I miss the immediacy of the keyboard; there was something nice about having the control matrix right next to the keys, & the rack version just isn't the same.

so- I stripped my 2000- I am going to use the 3379s in other projects.

Hi Duncan,

Thanks for the info, I'll give it a try first. One or two old disks load and
seem to work fine, most of the rest of them and all the presets dont though,
they just hang. Its quite odd. I've yet to get much further with it but I will
give that a go first.

I should be able to try it tomorrow. I'll let you know.

Many thanks, Marty
