Propet 2002 Plus and Digidesign Sound Designer

Propet 2002 Plus and Digidesign Sound Designer

2012-10-17 by awivhsh

Hi all, I am new to Yahoo Groups so I hope that I am doing everything correctly.

I have a Propet 2002 Plus unit in my studio, I very much love its sonic signature but it is quite a pain to program sounds with it... So I was wondering if anyone here has the old Digidesign Sound Designer Software? I am not sure of which software version would be compatible with my unit so anything is welcome and I will try it out.

Also, I will very soon switch to a mac mini computer for MAO. I am not very familiar with apple computers yet, does anyone know of a good way to run this out-of-date software on the most recent versions of Mac OS?

Cheers in advance,
Pierre.

It will not run on a Mac Mini. That old version of Sound Designer is meant to run on Mac OS 7.1 or so. Plus there is no point to run Sound Designer with the new Prophet 2000/2002 editor and E-Synthesist's Prophet Tools. They are far more powerful and faster and reliable.

Trust me, I know. I have 7 old vintage Macs right now and the old Sound Designer for the Prophet 2000 can't touch the new tools.

If you have to have the best of both worlds you can put a Mac Mini like I did in an old Mac case. Not a cheap or easy project but it can be done. (see pic) There is a Mac Mini in that Mac Classic II. You can see on the screen that I am running EMXP under Windows 7 under Boot Camp.

Thanks for your quick reply James! I didn't know about EMXP and it seems like a great set of tools that I will try out thanks.

I have tried the other editor that you recommend, on windows XP. It appeared very promising at first, but I eventually encountered several bugs/crashes both from my computer and my prophet when using it, mostly when trying to dump samples into the prophet, as well as some other minor analog and mapping parameters control/recall bugs. As said in my previous message, I use a prophet 2002 plus with 2x256Kb memory, dont know if that makes any difference.
does this software work fine in your setup?

Pierre.

Pierre,
during development we did see issues with some MIDI-Interfaces.
I'm sure you already tried to toggle the option 'RX-Handshake'
in the Options/Config menu.
Can you share the brand of your MIDI Interface?
We're always looking at improving the software so that it is
usable for the remaining Prophet2000/2002s out there.

Re: [prophet2000] Re: Propet 2002 Plus and Digidesign Sound Designer

EMXP is for Emulators and Emax's and I use an RS-422 to USB box called E-Muser which are very hard to come by and have to be built. . I think eventually the 2000/2002 will make it's way in there. E-Synthesist also wrote and released Prophet2000Tools. And yes it works great. But I can't verify anything regarding a 2002 right now. I don't have one at the moment to test. I'll pick one up when I see again. Right now most of them are in the wrong hands of certain people. But eventually a few 2002's end up being released back in the water, and I am just standing by again. If you're just wanting to do SDS dumps have you tried Awave or Sample Wrench? I can vouch for Awave big time. It works well with the Studio 440, SP1200, and Emax 1. If you feel that you have to run Sound Designer for the 2000/2002, I noticed that the old serial Opcode MIDI interfaces work well on the old Macs.

Hi Burt,

Sorry for late reply. We were using an RME Fireface UFX back then, and we identified the crash to be due to runing CopperLan software - more specificaly to the fact that it was generating Active Sensing MIDI messages. We have since run it through our RME and through a TC ImpactTwin without any trouble, as long as CopperLan was not lauched. Hope that helps!
I must say that since it works, we have been impressed with the scope of possibility it opens to us. But we have now switched to Mac OS and it doesnt work well when we run it in Virtual Box with rtpMIDI :
https://www.virtualbox.org/
Do you plan a release runnable under Mac OS? I am sure there is plenty of us out there desperate for it :) Or maybe you have tips to make it runn better with a virtual OS?

Pierre.
