Have you tried taking a large handkerchief with a sewn border. Wrap the border 1 and 1/2 turns between the knob and the panel. Bunch the rest of the material in your hand and pull gently but firmly. Have you double checked that the top of the knob is not a cleverly concealed cover with a nut and collet hiding underneath.
