You mean a Mellotron or Chamberlin? The different versions of the Freeman were all electronic and no tapes were involved. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb07/articles/freemanstring.htm

      I see that this thread is for the later, electronic,  Freeman String Synth.  Does anyone have any info on the early "Tape" unit?
