Hi- I just got a hand me down Kurzweil 1000 PX (1989?) from my older
brother. He owns a recording studio and thus takes very good care of
his gear, but this one for some reason does not work. He had it
sitting on a shelf for 8 years unplugged, so I know an electrical
spike didn't short it out. When I turn it on, the screen lights up
green, but no characters are displayed. I have the manual, and did
what it told me (soft/hard reset) and that did nothing. I opened it
up, and basically I figure the main board is not getting any power-
the LCD backlight is powered right off the internal transformer. Any
help or the name of a place in/near chicago that would repair such an
instrument is very much appreciated.

Hey Dave,
The best place to go in Chicago is Midwest Music Menders. They are in a little plaza at the corner of Fullerton and Elston (just east of Damen). They do warranty service for tons of new stuff but specialize in vintage synths and electric pianos. I've had them work on my moog and my wurlitzer piano. Sorry I don't have their phone number, but it's listed. They don't have a website.
Good Luck,
Jim
