The G101 is definitely jacked up in price because
of its "popularity"
amongst fans and musicians. . . but I'd gander that
its pitch-bending/wah,
maximized controls, and various other functions
along with the rarity
of finding one in great condition are also at work.
. . not to mention they are
a hell of a lot more durable for touring than Vox
or Farfisa (which was one
of the major reasons Ray used one)
I found one for dirt cheap at a thrift store, and
did a lot of work and research
on valuating it... In the past 2 years, I've seen
them sell on eBay for $400 at
a very rare minimum. . . the more realistic average
is from $600-$800. The
extreme highs (all of which were confirmed "paid
for and shipped" sales) were
$1000 $1200 and $1500. But again, *all* of them
that had realistic bidding going
on attained 20+ bids. . .
The idea about getting "plenty of combo organs" is
ignorant of the fact that they
all have their own sounds.
Also, consider the idea that you could (or your
friend could) easily sell it for more
money. . .
I myself would find $650 reasonable for a
non-museum quality organ that had all
functions going.

The
only reason the G101 goes for over-inflated prices is because Ray Manzarek of
The Doors used one. Unless you play in a Doors cover band, there are plenty of
combo organs at 1/3 the price that sound just as good.
