Gibson G101

Gibson G101

2001-02-05 by lectroshock@yahoo.com

Hi everyone,
Hope you may be able to help. My friend has finally agreed to sell
his G101 organ. The organ is in very good shape and plays wonderful.
The only repair it needs is minor, a wire has broke loose from the
line out jack and needs to be re-soldered. I've offered him a fair
market price but he feels it's worth more. So, I was hoping that you
may prvide some figures in black and white, so he can see for himself.
Not trying to steal it from him, but don't want to over pay...... Your
thoughts?
Thanks! Ray

It would be nice if E-bay offered a consumer price guide of past aution
prices for matters like this.

The only reason the G101 goes for over-inflated prices is because Ray Manzarek of The Doors used one. Unless you play in a Doors cover band, there are plenty of combo organs at 1/3 the price that sound just as good.

The G101 is definitely jacked up in price because of its "popularity"
amongst fans and musicians. . . but I'd gander that its pitch-bending/wah,
maximized controls, and various other functions along with the rarity
of finding one in great condition are also at work. . . not to mention they are
a hell of a lot more durable for touring than Vox or Farfisa (which was one
of the major reasons Ray used one)
I found one for dirt cheap at a thrift store, and did a lot of work and research
on valuating it... In the past 2 years, I've seen them sell on eBay for $400 at
a very rare minimum. . . the more realistic average is from $600-$800. The
extreme highs (all of which were confirmed "paid for and shipped" sales) were
$1000 $1200 and $1500. But again, *all* of them that had realistic bidding going
on attained 20+ bids. . .
The idea about getting "plenty of combo organs" is ignorant of the fact that they
all have their own sounds.
Also, consider the idea that you could (or your friend could) easily sell it for more
money. . .
I myself would find $650 reasonable for a non-museum quality organ that had all
functions going.

Just to clarify: I wasn't suggesting that all combo organs sound
the same - they don't. But why does a G101 (or a Vox, for that matter)
sell for 3 to 10 times as much as say, an Ace Tone? Is it because
an Ace Tone is inferior to a Vox or a G101? No! It's because Ray
Manzarek was never seen playing one. That was the only point I was
trying to make.
Igor.
