roland jx-3p huhhh?

Hey synthpals,

I just got my hot hands on a roland jx-3p. really excited about it but there's a problem. All the presets, and I mean ALL of them are engaged. I cleaned the pcb boards and checked the connections. No luck. Where might I look first? thanks so much for the attention on this.

yours, Sexysynth@@1

Hi Sexysynth,

Congrats on your Roland JX-3P. Wonderful synth and same generation as the Junos, but with two DCOs per voice. A bit more difficult to edit the sounds without the PG-200 module, though.

There is an upgrade option from Kiwitechnics, the Kiwi-3P upgrade kit. Now, yours could have this upgrade installed... have you checked?

Please take a look at this link at the Kiwitechnics website. The original Roland JX-3P service manual is also available for download there. The svc manual will be very useful for you in any case, upgraded or not:

JX-3P Upgrade

Good luck and keep us posted

Bo

Hi i had the same problem...you mean all leds are lighting up?

swap out ic35 74LS27 it fixed my problem. This ic controls the r/w line of the ram

get back to us if it solved your problem

good luck, br Dennis

You mean the buttons are all physically pressed? Could be PCB out of
alignment with front panel or something gooey stuck in them like Coke?

Bo, Dennis, Grant.
You guys are amazing! I realize I didn't give you much to go on..

Grant in this case it isn't the physical alignment of the buttons. The problem persists with module fully free and out of the case.
I don't know if the previous owner preferred coke or pepsi but these "ivories" have been soaking in it!

Bo, I'm checking out the upgrade. Looks pretty sweet. the good news is that I actually have the PG 200 module. This is a great and useful link. thank you!

Dennis, my money is on the IC. that "feels" right. I had a sony r7 that had needed IC replacement, as well as a pioneer sx-580 stereo..My first DIY repair success story!

I'll keep you guys posted. thanks for the excellent help!

to spot the source of the problem, you can try this first, disconnect the the keyboard connector on mainboard CN8 and CN9 (from main board to keyboard unit).
turn it on and tell me the result.

Please be aware of electric shock around the Power supply unit.

BR
Ichdar,

Thank you for your attention. I unplugged CN8 and CN9 and the result was the same... All the buttons on the top panel are illuminated. Does that suggest anything to you?

Suzy,

i'm sorry for the late response, and i thought it was a keyboard engaged instead of panel switch engaged. The CN8 & CN9 connector disconnection is only to isolate if the problem coming from the keyboard (short circuit or ohters)

now, we need the detail symptom, all panel switch no response? all LED/lamp stay ON? any sound from the keyboard (notes) or any infos that lead us to the rigth diagnosis step.

Do you have any knowledge in electrical/electronic ? it's my pleasure to guide you, but the next step will require the medium electronic knowledge, testing with voltmeter, or even an oscilloscope to verify the test point signal.

I will be more easy if you have that knowledge since the tools is not a big constraints nowaday (there are so many DIY tools in web)

First article on top. Is the group moderator active? I posted a week ago and I still don't see anything.

Anyway JX-3P is a pretty straightforward synth usually.. If all the lights are on with anything I always start by checking POWER SUPPLY VOLTAGES. There should probably be a ground reference point ...perhaps the case on some units. Check for impedance (ie. with ohmmeter) to the case from the lower left pin (looking with the chip's pin 1 indicator UP and looking down on it from the top) of any 7400 series chip pretty much or 4000 series chip. I'm sure the JX series all had some :-)

If you get near zero ohms then the case is probably a good ground reference. Power the unit up and check all pins coming off the power supply board. (ie the one the transformer wires go to except don't bother with those probably as they are AC and you want to set the meter for DC first and see what's coming out of the DC supply lines. )

If you don't find plus 5V within a fairly tight precision, and plus and minus 12 or 15V then probably something is wrong there. Sometimes filtering /regulation fail and lines will have AC on them to the point where you can't get an accurate meter reading and you'll have to use a scope to see what's really going on there.

BR ichdar, synthwookie,
thank you. Yes I've been coming back and checking the thread every few days. today I finally found your followups.
I'm going to spend some time with the synth and at the very least come up with a list of accurate symptoms along the line of BR's questions.
I'm comfortable with a multimeter so I'm going to check power supply voltages as synthwookie suggested.

thank you for all your support and interest!
Suzy.

BR,
Didn't get a chance to go through the list until now.

here's what I've got.

all 32 LED/lamps on the top panel, (under the music stand bar) stay illuminated when the synth is switched on with the exception of the LFO trig. that will only light when depressed.

I started this diagnostic with cn8 and 9 detached. then reattached.
In both cases the synth creates a tone when switched on that decays over 5 seconds.
followed by silence for about 15 seconds and then the tone repeats. again followed by silence, and so on.

it is unresponsive to keys pressed on the keyboard even when cn8.9 are attached.

totally capable and comfortable with a multimeter. would consider myself to have medium electronic knowledge. I have no oscilloscope.

thank you BR!
