space echo

hey, first off a disclaimer, I'm sorry if this list is strictly for the discussion of repair, I just assumed that the majority of those on this list would have quite a detailed knowledge and a lot of insight into what I am curious about, if this is inappropriate for this list I will gladly exit stage left =-) thanks for your cooperation and on with the show! hey all, I'm new to the list and I guess I'll start with a brief introduction. My name is Kevin and I'm from Seattle/Olympia wa and am currently enrolled at the Evergreen State College. I have a deep interest in vintage musical equipment as I play guitar and have for quite a few years (I'm 21). The reason I chose to join this list in addition to the fact that I'm very interested in reading the postings is that recently I purchased a Roland Space Echo-150 after saving for quite a while and have been using it about non stop for the month I've had it. I have been interested in tape echos for quite a long time and am very interested in the history of the machines, as well as personal stories and interests in them of others. I am now doing research for a paper on tape echos and the pulling of them off the production line in favor of digital, a comparison/contrast paper i suppose, although I am concentrating more on the analog tape echo side of things...I am particularily interested in why they were developed, ie. what brought on the craze in the early 70's, I am aware of course of the psych scenes deep interes in the Binson's Echorec and the echoplex and that the space echo particulary came about as competition to them. Also the implications these machines had on the recording world and what exactly they changed and paved the way for. I am also aware that the the RE-100 was first brought into production as a tape delay unit designed for the reliable playback of long announcements (altho I don't quite understand how this worked with a shorter tape delay) and perhaps these announcement machines were adopted by guitarists on a whim. Ok, well sorry for the novel of a first post, but I am very interested in what all of you have to say and look forward to hearing your responses, feel free to email me off list if you feel the need as I didn't quite understand the reference made to "once there is enough emails a digest will be sent out" Alright, thanks for your time and patience Kevin Crowe
