Do You have a an X-Y Joystick?
If so, you can avoid the pitfals of software with an electric motor
and it helps if you still have pieces from your old erector set, and a
rheostat....

it's a decidedly old school solution, from an old school kinda guy, 
but you won't have to worry about  serial port lock-ups!

(ok..ok.... i guess that IS my tongue in my cheek.... i reckon i
better shut up before it gets replaced by my foot (or Greggs foot!)
