It was mannerism in the true sense of the word. That is, the WAY in which the paintings were executed was deemed more important than the painting. Such artistic affectations are two a penny and ultimately die a quick death (how many cubist paintings can you name?). Forgive me for the O.T. tirade, but I just HAD to!
