Stackcables...

Stackcables...

2010-03-05 by gcmci

Am I out of my mind, of are these new stackcables from Tip Top Audio the best thing in electronic music since sliced bread?

Now we have stacking cables with the convenience of bananas (no more mults!!!) but also still have the normalling available with standard 3.5mm cables - sweet!

If they work well, they are. What I'd like to see is a 1/4"
version that you can solder yourself. I'm not holding my breath.

I'm generally not much of a cheap-skate but at $8.00 a pop I don't know.
I've got hundreds of cables and I don't think I could justify even five of each
size at that price. I know I should factor in multiple cost, and I love using
banana cables with my Serge but still $8.00 each!

I realize this has been discussed before but $8 per cable is a very reasonable price. The only reason other manufactures can offer their cables for so cheap its because they're making tens of thousands of cables. TipTop is a small boutique company. The fact that they were able to develop them and sell them at that price is pretty amazing. The other factor is that you don't have to replace all your cables. I mean, how often does one mult a signal?

All fine and good. I appreciate the fact that TipTop is a small company. But the
fact remains that $80 for ten cables is silly. And yes, maybe if I didn't have various
multiple solutions already I would consider purchasing a few of these, they make
sense from a functional point of view, but that doesn't take away from the fact that
they are an expensive solution/luxury.

The point of having mults available at every output is to encourage
signal splitting. You avoid the mental resistance -- the "oh, I have
to unpatch this cable, patch in a multiple or Y-adapter, and then add
another cable" factor.

I think the cables are reasonably priced when you consider the
avoided cost of mults and/or adapters and add the benefit of patching
spontaneity.

But, hey, to each his own. Lots of folks think that Wiard modules are
expensive.
