It should be alright to push.  Obviously it's slightly dangerous to run
the unit while out of its chassis (the typical static electricity or
inadvertent contact of metal to the exposed board), but pushing the
button itself is okay.  I'd expect either the front panel to either do
its whole LED reset lightshow, or do nothing.
