looking around inside my xl-7

looking around inside my xl-7

2003-12-05 by mike

Hey group

I was inside my XL-7 today trying to replace some of my parts that
have gone all crappy and found a couple of odd things. The first one
was this conector that looks kinda like a network conector on the
board that has all the step sequencer buttons on it.

Second and more interesting is a button that sits to the bottom right
of the small display. It is the same as all the other buttons on the
board. I would love to know what this is for. I am tempted to just
open the thing back up and press it just to find out but hey there is
no harm in asking first.

I put a picture of it up in my pics folder, take a look and see what
you think. And I also put a big picture of one of the boards up in
there it is taking up alot of space so I don't think i will leave it
there to long so go get it and let me know if you like it as I have
another one that I was thinking about playing with.

Peace

Mike G.

P.S. the picture file is under Mikexl7

Hey! You found the sample input port and the sample button! Just
kidding...  =)

Heh, you have one of the early boards that still has the debugging
connectors on it. I think the first large batch of these inadvertently
came with that connector still stuffed. Later rev boards just have an
empty space for it. That connector allows you to program the PIC
(handles button scanning, LED lighting and the keypad scanner). It's
the chip in the upper right of your picture.

Another vestige of the early rev boards. When the board was laid out,
somehow an extra button creeped in. It doesn't do anything. Again,
later revs still have the circuit, but the switch is left unstuffed.
Wait, maybe I'm wrong. What I was thinking of is an extra LED that
snuck in under the 7seg EDIT button. I'm not sure what that switch is.
Maybe a reset for the PIC, but I doubt it since it's way over there.
Hmm, now I'm curious...

It should be alright to push. Obviously it's slightly dangerous to run
the unit while out of its chassis (the typical static electricity or
inadvertent contact of metal to the exposed board), but pushing the
button itself is okay. I'd expect either the front panel to either do
its whole LED reset lightshow, or do nothing.

PS. you weren't the only one who only read the top of the message... =)

Hehee.

Reminds me of "Titan AE" when he builds the box with the button on the top
in his sleep and then doesn't know what it does....
