So far as I know the most recent E-Mu Sysex Manual is version 2.2. There are a number of sysex made simple guides out there. I got my start around 1985 with my first Casio synth. Casio's Guidebook for MIDI (Nov. 1985) has a very easy-to-get-into introduction to MIDI, including sysex. I saw it on the internet once; you may want to search for it. I'd put together a tutorial, but I've got bills to pay.
