trying to make the XL control my external gear - could use some help!!!!!!

2004-01-15 by dwoodaman

I have been going crazy trying to make what I think is a simple thing
work with my XL7 and my external synths: dump a std midi file into
the XL7 and have the midi file control the external synths as well as
the internal XL7 sounds. I dump the file using E-loader into the XL
and the XL stuff works perfectly as I would expect. The external
devices will stop and start from the controls on the XL7, but they
only play the internal patterns (with their limited sequencing
abilities) not the midi information the XL should be feeding them
with.

The external devices are a Yamaha DX200, and EA1 and an ER1. They are
chained like this: Midi out A from the XL to midi in on the EA1, midi
thru on the EA1 to midi in on ER1, midi thru on ER1 to midi in on
DX200. All the external devices are set to have their midi clock
information externally (from the XL7).
EA1 midi ch 11 and midi ch 12
ER1 midi ch 13
Yamaha DX200 midi channel 14,15,16
I have a std midi type 1 file, where the XL7 is on tracks 1-10, the
EA1 on ch 11 and 12, ER1 on ch13 and DX200 on ch 14
In pattern edit, in channel assign, I have the tracks set up like
this:
T1 – set to internal on ch1A
T2 – set to internal on ch2A
And so on thru T1 ch10 for the XL.
T11 – set to external on ch11A
T12 – set to external on ch12A
T13 – set to external on ch13A
T14 – set to external on ch14A
T15 – set to external on ch15A
T16 – set to external on ch16A

Why wont this work?

One last thing to note, whenever I save the pattern, it messes with
the preset that is called up on the EA1 and ER1 (not the DX200). I
know that the pattern will hold that information, but I don't know
how much room I need to leave at the beginning of any track so I can
input this information – is one tick enough? Won't this mess up the
timing of the sequence? But that is really secondary, because it
makes no difference if I can't use the full sequencing power of the
XL for my external stuff.
Any help GREATLY appreciated.
