RE: [xl7] Tempo Controller

2004-02-01 by Stu

After a bit more messing around I've discovered the following:

- If I press stop twice it resets the tempo to the base tempo.

- If I edit the tempo, either in the MIDI menu or using the edit button and
the rotary encoder on the front panel, then it no longer resets the tempo
when the pattern loops, nor does it get reset when I press stop twice.

- If I stop and change pattern, the tempo will once again get reset when the
new pattern loops, unless I manually edit the tempo as outlined above.

- If I change patterns on the fly (with 'keep constant tempo' set on the
'Chained Patterns' page in the MIDI menu), the tempo doesn't get reset when
the pattern loops or when I press stop twice.

- If I set 'change to new tempo' on the 'Chained Patterns' page, then change
patterns on the fly, the tempo gets reset whenever the pattern loops, unless
I edit the tempo again.

So I have a workaround now - start my set at the base tempo, then before I
use the tempo controller, edit the base tempo (by changing it by 1 bpm then
back again). Then, as long as I don't stop and change patterns, and only
change patterns on the fly, it should loop without resetting the tempo.
Obviously, 'keep constant tempo' needs to be set for this to work.

My guess is that the base tempo needs to be copied to the edit buffer for
the tempo controller to work properly when the pattern loops, otherwise the
pattern reverts to the base tempo.

Regards,

Stu

Ok, I'll try to clarify things a bit...

In pattern mode, if I use the tempo controller to control the tempo, it
works fine until the pattern loops, at which point the tempo reverts to the
base tempo set for that pattern. This happens regardless of whether I use
one of the frontpanel knobs to control tempo or if I use an external
controller.

(Interestingly, if I also set the same controller to control pitch on one of
my patchs, the pitch stays at the level set by the controller when the
pattern loops and doesn't revert to its default value).

I've tried the frontpanel knobs (both in quick edit mode and as programmable
knobs) and using an external controller, as well as different CC numbers
(I've tried setting the tempo controllers to use CCs common to the realtime
controllers (i.e. the same CC numbers as MidiM and MidiN) and also ones not
used by the presets) but whatever I try the tempo still gets reset when the
pattern loops...

Can somebody else check this and confirm whether it happens to them or not?
I'm hoping I'm missing something obvious...

Regards,

Stu

Do you have a tempo event other than at tick 0 or 1? Try looking
through the Event viewer on the conductor track (CT). Hmm, just
noticed that you're using tempo controller. Did this ever work? If
not, it might be that it's resetting all controllers when it loops.
Well, things to think about...
